We all need to be more tolerant. Thanks for loving Americans, they are nice people too - many are descended from British ancestors and share our language and culture. Americans have a fabulous sense of humour that's why we import
American movies and commedians. :wavey:

I totally agree. We do need to be tolerant but being honest about other nationalities traits and behaviour is not being disrespectful.
It upsets me that someone perceives my views as bigoted. I respect and tolerate differences in cultures, I have spent all of my working life amoungst people from all over the world...which is why I recognise how very different we all are from nationalities and even regions of our own country. People need to not get over sensitive about it...

its not honest its dishonest and it is bigotry....90% of the funniest comedians and funny shows and funny movies and funny actors come from America so for a bigot like bully Hopkins to endlessly slag all americans as lacking humour and irony is a lie a bigoted lie plain and simple

I don't think she slagged off Americans as 'lacking in humour'...she insinuates 'they don't get our humour'. If I have got that wrong then I don't and won't defend her.
I have joked with Americans and they laugh at my 'dry' humour once the penny has dropped. Take for example 'the Office'..I love that programme, but not every one does, everyone has there own humour. When the Americans created their own version I found it predictable and unfunny. The only American humour I have found brilliant is Friends..which I love more than the Office. Each to their own, we all have different takes on it. Please don't call me a bigot. It's your opinion that you think 90 per cent of movies etc from America provide us with the most humour...that's your opinion but not mine but that doesn't make me a bigot.

americans LOVE british humor, which is why they've aired old monty python reruns for years, benny hill, fawty towers, plus the original office etc we like some Canadian humor too thanks to classic SCTV but you guys are up there

Katie H only slags off Americans in reference to Perez tbf. Perez epitomizes the self-loving nature and OTT-ness she relates to Americans (not fair to any nationality IMO, but everyone gets generalized). Does/did Katie H have a problem with Cami, Michelle, Jeremy, Alex, or Callum? I enjoy many Brit shows and many American shows, some are my sense of humor and some are not. We are all very diverse and to generalize about a generalization is wrong as well.......... Irony.

I know right? I can't believe that Michelle just sat there like a ****ing moron and let her say that stuff about her nationality. Michelle is such a massive disappointment

It's well known they don't get our humour,it's just jumped on because KH said it and it's fine apparently for Perez to diss the Brits all the time, and tell us to "suck his dick"

What exactly don't Americans "get" about British humour? It's a stereotype and an untrue one imo

poppsywoppsy 03-02-2015 09:49 AM

There are very few American programmes which emulate our sense of humour, I think the Golden Girls and Frazier were the most popular and they were huge both sides of the Atlantic.

The American humour is prevalent in the Simpsons and Friends.

Some can cross the divide, mostly they don't.

I am not saying ALL Americans, but they sometimes don't get some of our words so the 'joke' doesn't come across the same, sometimes a word here can be offensive to them and vise versa.I love Americans but a lot of their humour is different to ours.

The most common thing I hear people say is that Americans don't understand Irony or sarcasm(and what I've also heard KH say too), now that is completely untrue and quite insulting, don't you think?

I saw Rich Hall (american comedian) he said the same thing, that Americans struggle with the British wit, sarcasm, irony etc but living here for a few years he got used to it and loved the British Sense of Humour.

No, not insulting, look how many of our top comedians have not made it in the USA.

It is just culturally difference, many Americans have a strong sense of Patriotism, Religion and manners.

It is almost the same as UK comedians make jokes about, it just doesn't travel.

There are a few who cross the divide like Joan Rivers, but not many.

It's probably more insulting the stereotype that British people all have bad teeth but it happens. I'm not going to get offended over it.

yeah when KH does it shes trying to appeal to the sheltered people that actually believe the stereotypes....(if you travel overseas you know most people are actually pretty clued in)

I can't say all Americans don't understand humour or irony that's like saying all brit's like tea! (I hate tea)

Some do some don't :D But that is people in general. I could never tar a whole country with that just because a handful of American's I may have met 'didn't quite get it' :D

No it's not always untrue,it's the same as they brand us as reserved , have you been to a US cinema ? I tell you they are quite loud and verbal compared to ours , we are very similar to them and also quite different.I lived there for a year and believe you did too,did you really see no differences in the cultures?
