There are serious documentaries, and then there are those such as this highly contrived, 'mockumentary' - scripted, directed and produced to give an artificial biased view under the guise of social realism. Bloomfield - who was still in film school when he made this film - admits that he set out to make a "satirical account of middle class values", from "a sense of mischief" after he interviewed eccentric MP Ronald Bell who "espoused his belief in the greatness of the British Empire." Bloomfield also admits that his 'mockumentary' developed in; "an ‘anarchic’ way" so as to include members of the local community who in some way similarly espoused Bell’s nationalistic ideology and interviews with Earl Howe, Mr. Fantham (the patently looney Tory carpenter) and the pupils of Oakdene School, were also added. This deliberate 'interplay' between seriousness and mockery is entertaining, but hardly conducive to the creation of a documentary which realistically reflects 'social' attitudes with anything approaching balance and honesty - even in a specific group or class of society. The 1960's saw a 'sea change' in traditional social and political attitudes and was one of the most radical decades in history. That radicalism continued well into the 1970's - especially among students - with the economic slump caused by the 1973 oil crisis pivotal. It is notable then, that 1973 is the very year that Bloomfield made this mockumentary, so where are all the 60's spawned radical 'prototype' members of society? Instead we have a narrow group of deliberately sought out and assembled 'cardboard' buffoon stereotypes. There is No doubt that SOME archaic 'Colonel 'Blimps' still exist in a tiny minority within the modern British Army, but to deliberately seek them out, assemble them and record them in a mockumentary which is solely designed to persuade that 'pompous stupidity' is UNIQUE to this class of officer ALONE is misleading, because the most sane and ordinary of officers can, and do, also possess 'Blimp' attitudes. So if the purpose of Bloomfield's mockumentary was to expose the thinly veiled racism, Nationalism, and myopic anti-immigrant attitudes of the British Middle-Classses, then at least show us the SANE and HIGHLY INTELLIGENT middle class bigots who held such attitudes and NOT just the crank element. This is why this contrived film fails miserably as a 'like' comparitor for today's UKIP party, because today's modern UKIP party (and its supporters) DO NOT merely consist of the said 'cardboard' crank/buffoon element of racist, Nationalistic, and myopic anti-immigrant bigots - some of US are SANE and INTELLIGENT racist, Nationalistic, and myopic anti-immigrant bigots. :joker::joker::dance::dance::dance: (Joke - Joke - Joke - before the reactionary torrent starts. :hehe:) |

And yet there is seemingly no end of support for the suggestion that if you'r on welfare you're the scourge of society, a drain on resources and a parasite on the arse of the strivers. Is that not our new sociological landscape? What was our legacy from the 80s?...There is no such thing as society, and that is becoming more and more evident. |
