You have to be a certain height to be an Air Hostess? Why?

In those days (back in the late 80's/early 90's) you had to be a certain weight (which i was within) but the height was 5ft 5".

I think with some airlines there still are height restrictions (Heathrow it's 5ft 3").

For what reason though? That seem really, really discriminatory

Meh, in that case they could put height restrictions on jobs like supermarket workers etc.

When I was really little I wanted to be Madonna. My Mother says she still remembers the horror on my Father's face when I was about five and was strutting around in my mother's shoes and slip with rows and rows of beads singing 'Like a Virgin'.

I wanted to join the army. After the initial intelligence tests, which I passed. I was asked which career within the army I wanted to pursue. (At that time I was just 4' 11½'' and 7stone soaking wet. I'm still the same height, but considerably heavier)
When I said Military Police, they just laughed at me. Then I said Driver and I was told that apart from staff cars I would find it difficult to manage heavy vehicles. Then I said dog handler.
A sergeant asked me 'What would you do if a dog went savage'? I replied 'Run'. He shook his head and said, 'No, you would shoot it'.
Quite annoyed I replied 'You didn't tell me I had a gun'.
Anyway for all that they still wanted to sign me up, until the medical when I foolishly said I had had rheumatic fever as a child.
My own doctor told me later that if I had said nothing about it, they would never have known!
Anyway after that I decided to 'run away to sea' and so began my merchant navy career.
