I hope you're joking. Are you seriously THAT desperate for Marc to be chucked out?

Oh, perhaps a Dublin thing then? It's basically synonymous with scumbag how I have heard it used. Like when I hear the term I don't think member of the traveling community I think heroin addled waster . I can't think of a time I recently heard it to mean a traveller but it must be different in different circles

When I hear it used it's like "there's a load of knackers horses in that field over there" "There was a fight in the pub last night, it was a group of Knackers" etc etc but it's used to describe a scumbag also here but more like they're that scummy they may as well be Travellers which is just as bad really, if you know what I mean

johnx 09-06-2015 02:45 PM

Should probably have a quiet word with him.

You're definitely right that that's how it got into general use but I think semantic change has moved it beyond that for a lot of people. I can still see how members of the traveling community would find it horrendously insulting though, regardless of content so I'm a firm believer that it shouldn't be used. I was more so trying to show what he meant rather than excuse his language. Like even reading your examples in my head I see a different group of people when you say that word because they've been essentially disassociated for me. However given how it came into language it does have a bad history. I mean I've met travellers and worked with some and they were nice to me. I understand other people have different experiences but we can't call them all good or all bad, they're people.

I honestly don't believe Mark was referencing the traveling community but it is still filthy language to use and I don't support it.

You justify a flat out death threat but complain about Harry saying she feels like hitting Marc?

It's different tho.
Marc has no problem with Danny and it's not like he meant it in that way. It's a figure of speech. loads of people say that to their friends tbh

It's not an excuse tho and I didn't even say banter. He wasn't threatening Danny with actual death. You really think BB would allow someone like that in the house? It's a figure of speech. My female friends say it to me all time when I do something that annoys them in a friend way.

the show is on it's arse because they allow vile, racist bullys to wander around unchallenged.

Seriousl,y more people should be reporting his comments or the youth will think it's ok and before we know it we will be back in the 70,s

Yes he should get complaints about his mouth but he isn't racist but you have let Harry off for using Marc's nationality as an insult and I saw people on here offended by that because they are irish. When you argue with someone nationality should be left out of it. Both are as bad as each other and should be judged the same. All females and males should be judged equally no one is better than another.

It is a word I don't use personally however because I do think it's a filthy word but his use was no more racial than if he'd called her Asian. The putting down of Americans in the last CBB was a lot more racially charged, as is forum members dropping Marc's ethnicity in insults towards him (vile Irish womanhater etc). Though the contestants in CBB were using more PC language. I think it's a question of context though I wouldn't justify him saying it since I dislike the word myself.

Im Irish and have lived her all my life and if someone is talking about knackers to me its itinerants, travellers, or in many other countries 'gypsys' I have never heard the term used for anything other than that.

Im from Cork and its only used when alluding to the travelling community

just thinkin 11-06-2015 02:03 PM

a knacker is a very derogatory word for the traveling community - he should have been kicked out immediately for that. It's a horrible word.

Im gonna kill ya,,, or I'm gonna murder ya, is everyday speak in Ireland - it means nothing.
