It matters because if an asian actor is playing an exaggerated asian stereotype, then it is still problematic though the asian audience may still see the movie and see it as light-hearted - something that is not attacking them. If a white actor plays the exaggerated asian stereotype, there is the real risk that it could be interpreted as racist because it can be very easily viewed as mocking and generalising an ethnicity.

Well said that elf.

What a load of nonsensical, touchy, half-arsed sh1t stirring.

You're equating slavery with a comedy actor portraying someone of another race?

Lighten up Josh! There are far more worthy racism causes to fight. This isn't one of them.

I just think with this logic though, that it's putting the emphasis on how something might be perceived, rather than how it is intended. And my view with racism, is that something should only be labelled as racist, if the intent is there. And regardless of who plays this role, it's still the same character, same writing, same movie, same intent, but foregoing an actor who they feel best fits the role, for someone else for the sole reason of pandering, doesn't help in any way to address the real issues of racism. If anything stories like this distract from the real issues imo.

There's a thread on this in SD, should they be merged together?
