Getting Ewan Mcgregor back for that Rey scene is tops. Also the way they got Alec Guinness to say Rey was cool too. I came out of it not sure if i REALLY liked it or thought it was okay. After sleeping on it, I think I'm leaning towards loving it. Lot's of throwbacks to the original series which i don't mind but some of it is a bit much. Rey/Luke lonely on a desert planet having lost their parents. BB8/R2 the droid that has a huge plot device attached. Han/Obi Wan dying just in sight of the younger characters.
Loved Ren it was refreshing to see a bad guy with that much explosive emotional range, as opposed to "dur i'm a bad guy kill all humans". And yeah Rey is definitely Luke's daughter. Han's death hurt bad but i kinda knew out of the old characters he'd be the first one bumped off. That Rey/Leia hug was weird i thought it shoulda have been Chewie and Leia but kind of makes sense if Rey is the daughter of Luke.

There's rumours that Disney and Lucasfilm have thought making a standalone Obi-Wan film with Ewan McGregor, so that would make sense getting him back to do that line.

Oh I'd quite like that actually! McGregor was one of the few good things about the prequel's IMO

I've just read that the stormtrooper in the "You will loosen my restraints" scene with Rey is Daniel Craig?? Wtf...

I saw it last night. In 3-d (which was bloody awful, makes the screen dark and the glasses on top of my glasses hurt my nose, plus its crap)

It was ok, the acting at times was pretty bad, mainly from the baddies

The total rip off of the Third Reich is hilarious and simplistic

The girl was quite good but so stereotypical in terms of being driven, a bit of a tomboy, weak yet strong la la

The black guy was similar, goofy thickoid who is a hero bla bla

The best lines were the ball robot and chewy

The Slitherin bad guy who killed han solo was pretty bad and looked like a right goth freak. The big Voldermot Doctor WHo baddy was awful "we will crush them and rule the galaxy....yawn"

The German SS Officer young bloke (Hux)was dreadful, he reminded me of a German from Allo Allo - his acting was dire

Also the scottish baddy who came for Han Solo was also laughable

Poe the all american hero guy was just a tired stereotype yawnfest

The last part of the film was the worst where you know there will be a big spaceship fight and in the end they will blow up the deathstar with a few seconds to go

I liked the MF bouncing off the ground etc that was good but overall it was just another cheesy USA film

6/10

First time going 3D? :joker:

I've been to the cinema to see a film in 3D twice - the second time was because a couple of years had passed and I thought it might have improved. It hasn't.

Gives me a headache, hurts my nose, makes the film jumpy when the camera pans fast, and yes, one of my major gripes is that it darkens the screen significantly. Oh also, I find that you often get a visible reflection along the top or sides of peripheral vision which is really distracting.

2D all the way.

I honestly thought it was the best Star Wars film to date. I thought Rey and Finn were great characters and, although their scenes were brief, I think Leia and Han Solo probably got more character development in this film than the original trilogy combined.

I really liked Kylo Ren. He's not a two dimensional character unlike every other Star Wars villain ever and I'm interested in hearing more about his backstory. He's not the best villain they've ever done but I think he's up there in terms of characters.

I do think it stuck a little too close to A New Hope's story beats at times but I don't think it's a weaker film for doing so.

Again, I'll let it slide as it makes sense from a storyline perspective: untrained jedi vs (conveniently) injured sith. But as presumably she will have been trained by Luke in the next one, and poutysith has gone to "complete his training"... I want a rematch. A nice, long, proper Jedi rematch.

Oh and as a final thought...

- If Finn doesn't turn out to be force-sensitive I will also lose my ****. Normal people can't use lightsabers! At all! Let alone go toe to toe with a sith (even a hurt one) and not get cut in half, probably by themselves.

Then again I think they're hinting that he is? Stormtrooper conditioning seems to work pretty well on almost all of them, so it would make sense if his instant defection as soon as he was supposed to start killing was because he was being "called by the light side".

Still, I will be considering this a huge plot hole if he's not. Stormtrooper with a lightsaber. No.

I thought this as well. I know that Kylo was injured/still in training and that Finn might be quite capable in combat but I still don't accept that it could be that even a match or that a lightsaber is ever an appropriate weapon for someone with absolutely no experience in using it.

Agree with a lot of this as well, Star Wars has always been this way a bit I guess but 'goofy' is a pretty good way to describe a lot of it

Every time BB8 was mentioned I just thought of Charley (it was great though)

Charley's making a comeback in episode 8 - "oh my god did you see the banners the stormtroopers were holding up for me!... they loved me!"
