When I've been in Eurpoe, I've found that 50's are used more like £20, 20's like £10 and 10s like £5, on account of there being a 5 euro coin that's used more like a £2 coin.

So I guess using a £50 note is more comparable to using a 100 euro note.

Last year when I went to Portugal, I had 2000 euros in 50 euro notes at the start. I threw them up in the air and rolled around like Scrooge McDuck :flutter:.

Which is sort of odd considering I handle £10k+ in cash on a near daily basis but... damnit, those were MY euros. My own!

There's a €5 coin???? Are you sure about that? I've never seen one :suspect:

Sam:) 10-02-2016 04:29 PM

I don't think there is a €5 coin unless it's some sort of "special edition" thing. I never knew that £50 were uncommon, from working on tills and personal use I'd say €50 notes are no less common that €20 here.

Surely they must have £50 in British ATM's, If someones taking out £50 or more it would be more convenient? that way if someone takes out £100 they would just get two notes, which takes up less space making the ATM less likely to run out?

No its taken as Cash Withdraws
from Banks

If you are taking out £20,000
in Cash
- then £50 notes make it better.
Its done alot
in Business

Or if you wanted to take out just £200
in a Bank
you can say in £50's please.

Very Normal.

smudgie 10-02-2016 04:56 PM

Much easier to stuff a grand or two under the mattress in £50's than Tenners.

High value bills are the ‘payment mechanism of choice’ for criminals and corrupt officials, according to Peter Sands, the former boss of British banking giant Standard Chartered.

£50 notes are only dispensed at a handful of cash machines in the UK, including in London’s wealthy Mayfair and Canary Wharf districts.

There is but you rarely see them as they are special occasion coins, at least our part of France.

If you handed a shop assistant in France a 100 euro note or even a 50 euro note they wouldn't be happy, unless your bill was 95 or 45 euros.

In France if your bill is 4.90 euros and you give them a 5, they don't generally give you any change. Its fun watching English tourists waiting expectantly for it. On the other hand, if you bought something that cost 4.90 and only had 4.80 they would let you have it.

Another tip for France is, if you want one item, always hold up your thumb. If you hold up your index finger the shop assistant will take that as meaning 2

It was Portugal when I had the patience stack of fiddies , and they seemed fine taking them... But it was a beachy / relatively touristy sort of area. And dinner always seemed to come to almost exactly 50 euros... No matter where we enter or what we ordered... Like some sort of conspiracy. It was always like 46/47 euros. Like they knew fine well we would just leave 50. hmph.

Bloody awkward French!
"how Many would you like? "
*holds up one finger*
"Ahh yes, two it is! "

:joker:... I did actually live in France for a couple of months years ago, my now-wife (who has a French degree) was on her year abroad there. But I just stuck to her like glue the whole time. It wasn't in a tourist area like Paris, NO ONE spoke English... It was a strange experience for an ignorant Brit, really.

user104658 10-02-2016 05:37 PM

Also I got loads of 5 euro coins in Portugal?? What is going on with this bonkers currency :joker:

MTVN 10-02-2016 05:59 PM

Had some bloke pay me for a 40p newspaper with a £50 note the other day, couldn't bloody believe his cheek

bots 10-02-2016 06:25 PM

From a money laundering perspective, £50 notes are not required. Most organisations won't accept payment of high value items in cash, so a £50 note is pointless

That just sounds like someone wanting to "break" a £50 and buying a low priced item as an excuse. I personally would much rather people just straight up ask if they can swap it.

I personally don't understand why people need security pens / scanners etc... I've seen a tonne of fake notes, and you can basically tell by touch alone if a note is fake if you're used to handling cash. Even the best visual fakes "feel wrong".
