Is this you making a funny? You agree that swearing should be curbed and 'chav' behaviour modified so you cement argument by saying they can '**** off'?

I listened to the 'moral maze' and thought Terry Christian was very eloquent with his condemnation, he's a very articulate speaker. The whole concept is flawed, this was highlighted by those asked to give an opinion.

Sorry, it was my attempt at humour :joker:

I should add that I have an objection to gangs of aggressive and abusive youths that do shout and swear. I don't think the problem should be addressed by banning swearing however, its the aggressive behaviour that should be penalised

I feel you've misunderstood the word, Kizzy. It has absolutely nothing to do with youth.

What exactly is a chav ?

an insulting word for someone, usually a young person, whose way of dressing, speaking, and behaving is thought to show their lack of education and low social class

In this case "young" meaning under around 40... not "youth". You could use a picture of my next door neighbours as the definition of "chavs", and they're in their 30's

Are you saying I'm old?.... Tread careful

Mystic Mock 01-04-2016 12:49 AM

It's not just Chavs that swear though?

And besides freedom of speech anyone? We can't only have freedom of speech when it's only our views being aired.

..this is a proposed swearing ban, right..?...I'm not sure how that could ever be enforced but the article is dated 1 April...

http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2016...n_9374004.html

..I can't see any mention of 'chav' in there, it's just a general proposed ban ..(or is it..)...

Let's just substitute the word 'chav' with the phrase 'anti-social behaviour', and the location 'Salford' for ALL the UK's towns and cities, and we are left with an irrefutable truth; that yobs are a growing problem in society, and it is a problem which needs addressing.

T.S. sums it up perfectly by using his 30-something neighbours as an example, and I have often noted how often it is that men in their 40's from all parts of the country, have been convicted of being 'football' thugs, so 'anti social behaviour' is not EXCLUSIVELY a problem caused by 'yoofs', though heavily DRUNKEN young people - male AND female - ARE without doubt, the biggest culprits.

How much of a problem 'anti social' behaviour is, depends upon one's own standards.

I am no paragon of virtue, and I can swear like the proverbial 'trooper', but do I want to take my wife and female friends into the town centre on a weekend night for a social drink, when drunken yobs are screaming and cursing and vomiting on pavements, with some males openly pissing in closed shop doorways, others exposing their arses and 'mooning' at their mates, and women lobbing out their breasts upon request?

Do I want to have to 'negotiate' my way through a crowd of ignorant bastards who are swigging from beer bottles outside the pubs and will NOT move when asked politely despite blocking off the pavements?

No I do not, and neither do my kids.

This is NOT a 'Salford' problem - it is nationwide, and it .
DOES need addressing

..I don't see how any kind of swearing ban would specifically relate to either 'chav or yob' though...it would apply to most people, I would think...yeah, I'll check it out now, Arista...

NOT A CHANCE.

Where such groups are concerned, the average P.C. - Police Constable - has his hands tied by P.C. - Political Correctness.

Ammi 01-04-2016 07:13 AM

...sorry I have time atm to listen to the whole programme Arista but I don't think that I agree that people have a 'moral right to have public space protected' in all of the ways that are being suggested/the swearing...if they want to try to promote more positive behaviour though then it would seem that a more positive approach would be the thing, rather than silly unenforceable 'bannings'....

Once you can have 45mins
spare to Hear the Hear this Debate
from that Link , 1st post.
I am sure you will find Terry is with you.

And Michael Portillo does not like Dog Poo

Older Folks and Working People
want these Yobs (Chavs) sorted.
Thats why they are bringing this in

Ammi 01-04-2016 07:48 AM

...bans just sound like more fines to me and not really interested in solving a problem if there is one that needs solving...just fine is the answer..fine the homeless for not having homes, fine the unemployed for not having jobs...fine them all for having no money and being on the STREETS, GODDAMN IT ALL.../just an avoidance to address...
