I'd probably recommend some kind of talking therapy.

The members took the decision knowing if it went this way the open would no longer be held there. That's their choice

There is an awful lot of snobbery still in golf clubs, the no women is just one side of it and I think Muirfield is one of the worst offenders.

You're so right. My local(ish) golf club allows women but why anyone would want to hang out with that bunch of old snobs is beyond me. And it's a shame, I wouldn't mind taking some lessons

Crimson Dynamo 19-05-2016 06:58 PM

in general snobbery and golf is a very English thing, its unusual in Scotland as it is much more a peoples game

There aren't any women only golf clubs. There have been men only and women only private clubs for years. I don't think it's the same thing at all.

And yet... Muirfield, where it's a people's game if you're the kind of people who have a cock.

Same in Scotland. My old club was dreadful. There are some nice, friendly ones, but still a serious number of Snobby ones

Not sure I see a problem with a private club making their own rules. The fact that numerous women-only clubs exist and you never hear about them. Suppose that shows how hypocritical this fake outrage is.

Difference is that this club wanted to profit from a tournament while still keeping their archaic rules.

It's a private club so they make their own rules but they can't expect the event money to keep rolling in as well.

That's it... in a nutshell.

Not true the letter they sent to members recommended changing the rules, the proposal was defeated by 14 votes so not overturnable

It's like with the WI, only women can join but men can still take part in the activities etc. It makes no sense to me at all. I think all of these organisations need to just move forward with the times and get rid of their 'men only'/'women only' rules. How is there any benefit to any club in not allowing members of a particular sex?

What if it's part of your culture though, that's a whole new can of worms

Yeah I suppose that complicates it a bit, but I'm just speaking idealistically really, in that I don't think it should ever be an issue and single sex clubs just strike me as a really odd thing for us to have. I mean maybe 'back in the day', but to me they don't fit with how society currently operates. I think this is the kind of thing that future generations will look back on and laugh at us about

That's true, you are right, it just didn't make the two thirds majority required to change the ruling.
