Amy Jade 16-07-2016 09:52 PM

Vanessa, you call Ryan's comment awful but you supported Marco who called Laura a slut and a bitch when they were in the house together...I'm a bit confused by that

Jason knew what he meant and explained it to Hughie....unfortunately the likes of Hughie and Ryan don't really know what the word means.

Thats not derogatory though. Thats not what derogatory means. Its a valid reason for nominating somebody but not because what Ryan said was derogatory.. its not derogatory.. Its crude, hypersexual, perhaps disrespectful.. But not derogatory.

The thread asked why Jason is getting the flack and I believe it is because he has no idea what derogatory means.

And thats whys the argument died down afterwards. Jasons nomination was completely valid. But Ryans comments were not derogatory. The initial confusion evaporated cus he explained himself further.

I notice that one of your descriptors for Ryans comment was 'disrespectful'.
Now here is the definition of 'derogatory' -
'derogatory
dɪˈrɒɡət(ə)ri/
adjective
showing a critical or disrespectful attitude.'

So actually according to you Jason does infact know the meaning of the word.

Derogatory and disrespectful are not synonyms

Yes what Ryan said could be disrespectful.. But not derogatory..

Spitting on a grave is disrespectful and not derogatory for example.

I don't know how to explain this to you any further, this is something you (and Jason) should research in your own time.

Watching the video of Ryan talking utter filth proves Jason was 100% justified in the reason he nominated him

I was in my garden this morning and stepped on a fat slimy slug which had been gorging on the leaves of a young plant. Boy, I wish I hadn't - I had to spend hours explaining to that 'orrible thing as it was dying, just why I'd squashed it.

I found myself briefly touching on aspects of a whole range of subjects from existentialism to Freud's theories of pscho-analysis in my attempt to justify my action, but finally, I just had to face facts, and tell that slug, that I squashed it because it was a 'orrible, repulsive, slimy pest which NEEDED squashing.

it's a funny old world - innit.

kirky baby - when you finally tire from me - I hope you don't do that to me. :bawling:

You don't know how to explain it because you are wrong. If we take the literary meaning of all words spoken, the English language makes no sense. It is a language that we fill the gaps in with common sense and understanding. The best known phrase or statement people these days use is f..k off. Try explaining that to a foreigner. It means make love away....no that's daft. Just the same as Derogatory and disrespectful live in the same bowl.

Anyone can dissect and cogitate over everything we say and come up with a technically logical reason why it makes no sense but as Churchill one said, if it sounds right in English, it is right.

The statement Jason made to Ryan made no sense to ryan because he is thick, but when we apply a bit of common sense to what he said, nearly everyone there understood what he meant. Trying to prove it is grammatically wrong is an exercise in futility and fails badly. You are now being derogatory and disrespectful to everyone that thought the statement was right, work that one out.

If you think that derogatory means disrespectful and disrespectful means derogatory then i honestly feel a bit sorry for you.

Yes Ryan was disrespectful. If Jason used this as his reason, The house wouldnt care. But Jason used the word derogatory and this did not make sense in the context that he used.

gravediggers come, gravediggers go, but it's mostly all mechanised nowadays: gone the peace and quiet when a man/woman could pit muscle against sod then sit quietly, legs dangling into the excavation, to ponder life's meaning over a pastie.

I am shocked that so many adults don't know what derogatory means - yes, all derogatory things are disrespectful. That does not mean all disrespectful things are derogatory. Christ. Ryans comments were disrespectful, not derogatory not both. Perhaps I should give Jason the benefit though, apparently lots of adults don't understand the word
