nah

Mystic Mock 26-08-2016 11:22 AM

It's a bit of a strong word for me to call someone a cancer, but it's not as offensive to me as the actions that have happened in this series.

y.winter 26-08-2016 11:25 AM

No. Sometimes PC is just an acornym for personal computer.

Not at all

power2thepeople 26-08-2016 12:15 PM

It's not a metaphor I would personally use. Brits are more likely to say someone is poison or poisonous. If she had wished it upon him, I would certainly be shocked. She made a brasher comparison than Brits care to use. It's a commonly used metaphor in Holland. The difference is that the word 'poisonous' has lost it's impact as it's not as prevalent a cause of death as it was centuries ago. Cancer is. She was using a more contemporary metaphor to show how he affects her. She did not wish it upon him. Before anyone asks, yes I have lost 4 family members to cancer. Tommorow I'm holding an all day Summer Lights cake and crafts day for MacMillan Cancer Care. Hopefully raise plenty of pounds anyway.

I agree, P2TP. I think she used the word "cancer" because it was the worst thing she could think of and she felt so strongly about it, not because she wished it on him.

Your Summer Lights day sounds lovely. I hope it goes well and that you raise lots of money. :)

Thankyou. I'm no Mary Berry but I'll give it a go!

No problem with her saying it, I lost some respect for her when she denied it ...." I Say it How It Is " is suppose to be her default setting according to Renee.
It showed dishonesty and weakness and I was disappointed with her.

power2thepeople 26-08-2016 01:32 PM

I can see your point. She did deny it. But she can't keep up the dishonesty. He had her and she knew it, so she started to laugh. Waiting for this to be pounced on as a sign she was laughing at her use of the metaphor. I saw it as 'ok,you got me, I can't deny it'. She did the same over spitgate in the bedroom when he knew she knew and she eventually admitted it. She's self aware herself that she 'says mean things' in the heat of a moment. As you said, and I do take your point, she initially flat denied it. But if she continued with a strong denial and never dissolved into laughter, the viewers are more than aware of the continued dishonesty. She said what she did in a meltdown. To sit outside in a quiet reflective moment with him and bring it back to that moment of 'telling it like it is' would also be slaughtered on here for being hardfaced, unforgiving, sucking the fun out of the show etc etc. Just my thoughts but I do take your point that initial denial was not a good look.

Secondary meaning of cancer

Quote:

An evil or destructive practice or phenomenon that is hard to contain or eradicate.
For Renee Bear fits the description. So no.

Northern Monkey 26-08-2016 01:58 PM

If she was joking then it was in poor taste. However if she actually meant it(which i think she probably did after her saying she wants him whacked by her mobster mates) then she is disgusting.

Ellen 26-08-2016 02:05 PM

It was a statement that he was nasty, i have heard it before 'you are the Cancer of Society' etc. I don't believe she meant that she wished he had Cancer but that he was the nasty part that needs to go.

I wasn't insulted by it but can understand if some are.

ScottyT 26-08-2016 03:29 PM

Honestly if you're offended by something like that, you're not fit to live in this world.

Liam- 26-08-2016 03:31 PM

Not in the slightest, I agreed with her wholeheartedly.

Ant. 26-08-2016 03:38 PM

Bear fans not batting an eye when he and the ratpack victimised people like Saira yet losing their **** when someone compares him to cancer, which can be known as:

..it really does show the level of 'hate' in the house..(also in Renee saying that she actually wished physical harm on Bear..)..I mean wow...but it's all though been provoked/instigated/stirred up, mixed around and evoked by Bear..this is the house he wanted, this is the house that he's striven for, this is the house that he's given us...he's been relentless in that and now it's all like a monster to his Frankenstein...it was really never going to end any other way ..he's pushed/prodded and poked for the worst in people and that's exactly what he's got..and this is entertainment..?...this is to further his career or whatever..?..no, this is hate, for which he's greatly responsible and it really isn't pleasant at all...grim Bear/grim Renee...just grim, grim, grim ...

Exactly. Bear is the king of hell in there. If most of us met someone like that in the real world, we'd be like 'Okay mate. Have a good night. Don't do too much more coke.' But because the other HMs are stuck with him, he's been at liberty to inflict his personality on them, over and over. The others are there for the money (fine) but Bear would happily live like that all the time, if he could. I just wonder how he's going to cope once the series is over.

Yaki da 26-08-2016 03:57 PM

No. Not at all. Fed up of people battling over who can pretend to be the most offended.

power2thepeople 26-08-2016 04:02 PM

Whoever wins tonight it's a sad state of affairs. Forced antagonism, forced provocation, forced and fake humour....well if that's a force of new humour on society, I despair. I wasn't forced to watch CBB but I did, as I wanted to view a number of HMS interacting. It's car crash TV. I'm just relieved I won't be watching Bear again. I'd rather watch real comedy and entertainment.

ThriceShy 26-08-2016 04:03 PM

If bear had called Renee cancer then there would be an absolute outcry on this forum.

Except this is assuming everyone who found it offensive is a Bear fan. Which is not the case.

Though again, I didn't personally.

She wasnt saying "hahaha cancer is funny" like some users misheard... She compared cancer to the worst person she has ever met.

There isnt disrespect here imo, she said at the beginning of the show that she despises bear, it is probable she feels the same way about cancer.

I love the Tiger Lillies song 'Cancer' everyone gets way too over the top , somethings gonna get everyone and why that word strikes everyone with fear is daft , tons of other things kill people but everyone seems to be striken by that word.

Robodog 26-08-2016 06:04 PM

It was pretty heavy to use it with such venom like she did. It is about the worst thing you can call someone.

Imagine if Bear had called her cancer! How do you think she would react?

Imagine how social media would react to Bear calling her that!

Gusto Brunt 26-08-2016 06:10 PM

Renee was an absolute disgrace.

For a woman her age. 68. She should have had the maturity to NOT use a very serious illness to make pathetic vindictive digs at Bear.

Bear, who is 40 years her junior, even he thought it was out of order.

Renee is an appalling person.

dyfed 26-08-2016 06:55 PM

Very accurate ... Thought when Aubrey said he was like herpes.....was spot on.
