Considering how much longer we all live now and how much healthier we are compared to previous generations, it makes sense to me to raise the retirement age.

Cherie 04-02-2017 12:45 PM

Work the chicken livered buggers until they drop

On a practical note some jobs are not suited to working into your 70s if you have a desk bound office job yes, but if not every job, would you want a surgeon working on you with the shakes :umm2: or a 75 year old trying to teach Reception kids, even if we do live longer, we still get age related ailments at the same age as people did years ago

I agree Cherie. Just because we're living longer, doesn't in any way mean we're staying strong and healthy for longer, too.

maybe carney should have shut his trap about the EU as he now has egg on his smug face. I may have a look in some old SD threads to see what members were riding on the back of the 0.8% forecast and predicting brexit doom and gloom, I think I can recall at least one....

So you think people who do nursing for example should work 7 days a week?

No Amy
Nurses get days off
because its hard work and some
old folks die while they are working.

they can work 7 days a week

That's a given for any immigrant that wants to reside and work here. I don't know if you have seen the citizenship exam. I have and my guess is, most Brits wouldn't get a pass.

Arista, the more you say, the more it sounds as though you want to live in an Orwellian type society.

DemolitionRed 04-02-2017 06:54 PM

Perhaps we should just bring back the workhouse

No I haven't , but although there may some Brits that might struggle I know from experience there are quite a few immigrants using interpreters within the NHS which suggests there are a fair number not making the effort.

Ronald. 04-02-2017 07:30 PM

I retired earlier than I had hoped. However my job was very physically demanding with carpentry. I still do the odd jobs for friends that I know but as I headed into my late 50s everything took twice as long with twice as many cups of tea! My wife however is still a teacher and plans to work for another few years .

Regarding young people , let's not make them grow up any faster than they have to. I'm all about education. My eldest has done great things since coming out of university. I was never shy of hard work but I had no qualifications and everything I learnt was from my father before me . I would have loved an opportunity like university. R.
