It will be kind of interesting to come back in a few years and see if any of these threads and dire predictions have happened. Though I think what most people forget is that we have a potentially new government every 5 years so the chances are any changes made will be made again.

Like with Freedom of Speech, you either accept all of it or you are against it, there are no grey areas. The internet has it's dark sides but those sides aren't beyond the law which makes the idea of handing over control to a government who will only use it to benefit themselves completely silly and needless.

Brillo, people have died to ensure you get to enjoy the freedoms you experience on a daily basis. Do not piss all over their sacrifices for a sense of false security.

I am well aware people have died Thanks Dezzy. I am a strong believer in our armed forces past and present and the sacrifices all generations have made. TBH I have not always got that impression from you so quite surprised by such a statement.

The manifesto even suggests that the government might stop search engines like Google from directing people to pornographic websites. "We will put a responsibility on industry not to direct users – even unintentionally – to hate speech, pornography, or other sources of harm," the Conservatives write.

:umm2:

I'm sure that Pornstars love being compared to hate speech and actual crimes.

The idea has potential if used properly, but it just seems that instead of dealing with dodgy websites, or threatening posts, they're instead more concerned with taking on their own personal prejudices.

Just another clear indicator of what kind of police state the Tories want us to live in. How blatant do they have to be to make Cons voters reconsider ?

It's no wonder May was soon keen to hold Trump's (tiny) hand.
At least we probably won't have to tolerate Trump making his State Visit here any more. There's a very good chance that the Middle-East trip he's currently on will be his first and last as President. I suppose the only trip he can look forward to now is the one to Prison!!!

The fact that anyone would willingly accept or support this, is terrifying. I already use a paid VPN on my desktop PC for anonymity but no doubt they'll find a way to make VPN use illegal eventually, too.

everything has good and bad - you got good poets and terrible poets (waterhog) but all are free to pollute. the internet of course is a huge help to us all and does massive good but there is a dark side ! but this is the case with everything ?

I have no problem with the government regulating the internet providing they first regulate there own ship - and once parliament is running with no corruption - bring on the change tick tock tick tock ?

First step to a Chinese style of democracy....

'Internet censorship in China is extreme due to a wide variety of laws and administrative regulations. More than sixty Internet regulations have been created by the government of China, which have been implemented by provincial branches of state-owned ISPs, companies, and organizations.[1][2] The apparatus of China's Internet control is considered more extensive and more advanced than in any other country in the world.[3] The governmental authorities not only block website content but also monitor the Internet access of individuals;[4] such measures have attracted the derisive nickname "The Great Firewall of China.'

This is totally anti freedom.
It mentions news websites. That is a slippery slope. They may start by saying they're trying to get rid of "fake news" but then abuse those powers to take down anything that goes against their agenda.Unbiased information will be even more of a rarity.
I'm all for forcing internet companies being pushed to tackle extremism and other such nastiness but this appears to go waaay further than that.
The Tories know they can push this through along with the fox hunting because they're so confident of a huge majority so they're getting as much crap as possible through.
No way i'd vote for this.
