There was much the same reaction when Warren Mitchell played the character Alf Garnet in the TV series. It was a measure of his acting ability that people truly believed he was the person he was portraying.

As people commenting have no direct experience of the real Daniel, I think he deserves at least the opportunity to be himself in the program before rushing to judgement. That being said, I wasn't particularly taken with him in the show last night
