I know of one that was shut down because they posed as a 14 year old girl, "caught" someone who they believed was posing as a 15 year old boy, harassed him in the street, called the police, had him arrested...

Turns out he was indeed 15, just tall for his age.

Then members of HIS family went after the "catch a predator" guys and kicked the crap out of them.

... .... Basically I can see why people are all for it, but when it comes down to it, they're usually manned by a bunch of thugs who have no idea what they're doing.

I agree with the idea, though this sort of thing seems better left to the police, unless they're working in conjunction with the police (like they do in my town). The police should have control of them since the evidence is the most crucial part to catching them legally.
