****ing ignorance
Someone displaying markedly unusual behaviour

You might want to mind the insults, as at least I know several definitions of "freak"
sorry... i wasnt making an insult.... i was making a point that freak is not a good word to use.....The OED describes freak as a person or plant with a distinctive physical abnormality. so there......

Quote:

In current usage, the word freak is used to refer a person with an unusual personality. The older usage, referring to the physically deformed, such as would be seen in a sideshow, has nowadays generally has fallen into disuse.

Thats from Wikipaedia.

You appear to have chosen a single specific usage of the word freak in order to make your case and ignoring the full definitions..... .

freak (STRANGE)
noun [C]
a thing, person, animal or event that is extremely unusual or unlikely and not like any other of its type:

freak
adjective
very unusual or unexpected:

In the context of my OP you should have checked the noun variant, but that would not have supported your POV

so there

i would trust the actually definition in the OED more Wikipedia.... but it doesnt really matter... lets move on...

i like the eccentric characters because they make it more fun..... i mean think about it if it wasnt for them big brother would just be a house full of anthony huttons and cameron stouts.

Sunny_01 30-05-2007 01:31 PM

I understand what you are saying Spacebandit.

I dont particularly want to watch a house full of idiots, drama queens/kings, attention seekers, BUT I do want to see some of that kind of person in the house if that makes any sense what so ever.

I want a good mix

Other definitions are from Cambridge, only the first from Wiki
don't actually have an OED at hand

Let's face it, it wouldn't be BB without a little freakishness....

As long as it's not another *ahem* witch ("Yeah, alright Mary - You're a witch, OK!")!!!

Same here, but theres just been too much of a bad thing the lsst couple of seasons, and certain HM's picked only for the sake of controversy.

No-one wants BB4 pt 2, but thanks to the actions of certain HMs in CBB its a possibility.

Like I said earlier, for me the dream show would be a mix of 1, 3 and 5.

1 for the [mostly] ordinariness of the HM's.

3 because it was pretty much fun all the way - few bullying things coud have done without, but the tasks were pretty good and the HM's characters were well matched, which I think is the most important thing. Although we began to see stupidity hailed as a virtue and reason for fame, something that has always troubled me

5 started with the over the top characters too much, but did have the advantage of a couple of blatantly scheming admitted gameplayers who were able give back what they got, however it was given - when it was verbal it was the most fun to watch but then the idiots couldn't handle it and pushed the boat out, the tempers flared and it started to get uncomfortable to watch in places, the winner was obviously chosen, Nadia made demands of BB and got away with it every time and it became a car crash programme.

6 had its moments, but the selection of some A1 category lowlives to take part was obviously a deliberate ploy for attention of the wrong sort. But I have to admit that even for car crash tv it was hypnotic to watch at times, but sometimes disturbing, especially Craigs amorous intentions on Anthony.... and the rest of the Maxwell klan, though their downfall was a joy to watch

7 was fixed from the getgo.

A good mix of HMs and a show that is some of 1 mixed with 3 and 5 and a sprinkling of 6 for flavour

Spacebandit, I dont agree with some of things you are saying but i agree with some of them. I dont want to see people causing trouble (like the example you give of Marcus) but I think you have been very unfair to brand people freaks for the reasons such as 'tugging on heart strings' and wanting to do something for their family. If someone is doing the competition for good reasons like Pete, then I think they should be encouraged to do it, and not be called a freak and prevented from taking part.

I think there are certain types of people who will be good for BB shows and you have described alot of them in your opening post, the types of people who will make good TV and have fun with the other housemates. Aslong as there are no people looking to start fights and arguments, I think it will be OK.

Chrizzle 30-05-2007 04:01 PM

Not fair to call them 'freaks'
Imo theres been no freaks in Big Brother. They are people and deserve a chance to be in Big Brother.

If there wasnt unique characters we'd get a repeat of BB4, and then youd be moaning.

Rory 30-05-2007 04:04 PM

I think we can all say this...nobody like Pete.

He played up to the cameras more than anyone.

MarkWaldorf 30-05-2007 04:05 PM

I agree Rory. I was looking back on footage last night and noticed that.

I hope there BB5 type people, that was a great series. But not too similar.
