That makes sense to me (not sarcasm, by the way).

Hear hear! :hello:
What? I dont understand your point. She used a racist term. Why does she have to cause serious offence before you feel it matters?

Amy 07-06-2007 10:57 AM

I just mainly feel that what she said she never really thought before she said it.. I don't think she meant to hurt anyone but did just what I said and did not think.

Again. She used a racist term. That is all that matters.

InTheFade 07-06-2007 10:59 AM

To be honest, much as I dislike her, I think it would be harsh to give her a very hard time for being 'racist'. I suspect it wasn't the first racist comment she's ever made BUT we don't know that for sure and it's bad enough being chucked out of BB without having to suffer for it too much afterwards. I think she can redeem herself although if given the opportunity, I wouldn't try to make friends with her lol.

Racist terms do not make you racist, using them to cause offence does. She didn't use the word in question to cause offence, ergo, not racist.

So you admit that it's a racist term? I don't think she is racist but that is not the point in my eyes. If C4 let this go it would set a very bad precedent. Do you see that?

Well, if that's the case, Charley should be in trouble too. According to the transcript, Charley did use the words 'I'm a ******'. Why is that okay?

She obviously didn't think - but her AND CHARLEY know it was a mistake and I don't think any bad feelings came of it - because of this I haven't lost respect. But I never really 'had' respect for any of the contestants as I don't actually know them...

Another thing. The next time you see a black person in the street say - hello ******. See how they respond. You're argument that racist terms are only offensive when used to cause offence has no merit what so ever.

rice_square_return 07-06-2007 11:11 AM

i dident respect her in the first place she seemed so stuck up her arse and she dosent think before she speaks you know.

In short, its not, in my opinion. But C4 know that they will get 0 complaints about a black woman (afro-caribbean if we're being PC) using the word.

In that case, I agree, but the implication of this thread, to me, was that Emily is racist, and to me that is incorrect. But yes, the word is racist, and she shouldn't have used it.

That's not what I'm saying, what I'm saying is, if a racist term is used to cause offence, then the person who said it is racist, if it is not, they are not. The word is racist by definition, regardless of context, but that doesn't make the person who said it racist.

In my opinion, that's an insult to Charley (on C4's part, not yours).

Oops I accidentally edited your post, sorry, for anyone reading, my comment was 'In my opinion, that's an insult to Charley (on C4's part, not yours).'

And I've stated that I don't think Emily is racist. Are you saying that she should have stayed in the house?

I agree. Basically the word is a total no no. It's highly presumptuous to say that C4 wouldn't have received complaints if Charley had used the n word. How can you possibly know that? I, for one, would have been offend.

Mrluvaluva 07-06-2007 11:20 AM

I would never dream of calling someone a n****r in a joking way because I think the actual word is offensive in itself. It now ranks as perhaps the most offensive and inflammatory racial slur in English.

Agree.

Who cares what context that word is used. We should encourage people to not used that word.

Ella 07-06-2007 11:25 AM

I didn't really have any respect for her anyway, But after that comment and respect that I may have had has totally gone. She knew what the consequences would be after CBB. So she deserves all she gets.

Exactly, whether she had intended to be racist or not, she should have thought before she opened her mouth.

~Kizwiz~ 07-06-2007 11:26 AM

What a stupid little girl. It is, in my opinion, after all that went on in CBB, the worst thing that someone could say in the house.

She didnt mean it in a racist way, I can see that, but it still can be concidered a rasict term by many.

The fact that both Charley and Nikky were shocked that Emily said the ofending word speaks volumes to me and therefore I agree that she should have gone.

So in answer to this thread, how can I loose respect for a person who never had mine in the first place??? She didnt do anything to earn an ounce of it from me.

MaDdOctoR 07-06-2007 01:12 PM

Like I've just posted in a new thread, She wasn't the only person to use the word.....so why is she gone and the other person still there?

it shouldn't matter what colour you are, if the word is offensive then you should be treated the same way....

I'm sure BB had their reasons - we're kept fairly in the dark at the moment.
