That's irrelevant - if you know the meaning of it and say it to another black person: surely it brings back terrible connotations, and you all then sit down and think about what you've said?

No, it's made out to be a jokey term, completely the opposite to the meaning if a white/other race uses it. It's absurd. If you don't like the word, don't use it.

Yeah sorry wiki is a rubbish source, but you know what i mean.people should just look up the history of the word before they comment.

i bet if lesley or another unpretty housemate said "N***er" all the emily fans would be up in arms.

All you people talking about black and whites both being able to use this word.DO yourself a favour and actually do some history on wikipedia etc on this word.

The word should NEVER be uttered from a white man or womans lips again.

exactly!! NEVER should i white person say it.

although some black ppl dont agree with saying it themselves, alot of them use it as a way of turning around a word used against them by white ppl for years into a term of endearment AMONG THEMSELVES to take the power away from the way in which it was originally used.

You see if Lesley said something like that, people would be in more shock but because it's some undereducated teen [prediction probably not reality]..people don't 'shockfactor' as much.

Jimboy69 07-06-2007 11:10 PM

Fair play bugsy.

Blink_Me 07-06-2007 11:27 PM

And she should realise that there are millions of people watching this show. She was saying, "people know what I'm like. I didn't mean it in that way." How the heck do we know that? Millions of people don't know her personally. We don't know if she was messing around or not.

Jimboy69 07-06-2007 11:37 PM

The N word's original meaning is an awful one.

But we live in a world of 'equality' (apparently) And I believe either no one should be able to use this word or everyone should. Because otherwise this problem is just going to keep arising.

She didn't use it in a rascist sense you all know this. So stop talking utter bollocks. Quentin Tarantino uses it in the same sense Black people do. Sam Jackson even once said 'Quentin's allowed to use it.'

Why? Why is quentin Tarantino allowed to use it? Just because he's using it in a non rascist sense (just like Emily) and because he's cool? what a joke.

No Emily should not be punished. Everyone makes mistakes. This was a tiny one, which could not have been blown out of proportion any more.

Why do you keep ignoring the point that she said she has used it back at home several times, it's clearly something she's at ease with saying and not just a slip of the tongue.

no thats wrong that QT uses it,unless he is using it in his art.

I bet you have no relation to discrimination of any kind do you.Because if you did you would understand why this is such a important and terrible situation.

Emily said directly to Charley. Tarantino is not directly saying it to his cast.l

I wasn't ignoring it- I don't think it matters. I know people who are black who have white friends who use the N word. And it is not used in a rascist way. Being P.C all the time does not make you a good person. I have nothing against any other race, but I think this whole thing is a joke.

Because I know that every time Emily has used has been in a non rascist way, isn't that all that matters? Black people use it in a non rascist way. But Emily's not allowed to because she's white, and because A bunch of dead white people started using it as a rascist term. Can't you all see how stupid this is?

this is NOT about being P.C,Its about being RESPECTFUL to another culture.

'I bet you have no relation to discrimination of any kind do you.Because if you did you would understand why this is such a important and terrible situation. ' What do you mean by relation to?

Quentin Tarantino uses the n word normally, and he's used it in his films yes.

The "bunch of dead white ppl" may be of no relevance to you today, but to black ppl it is mainly as bcos of those "dead white people" millions of black ppl were tortured killed raped kept as slaves, and as a result of slavery it still effects black ppl in TODAYS society!

Jimboy69 07-06-2007 11:51 PM

Yes TTW I know all that well. What I'm saying is The white people who are alive today are not to blame.

Whose blaming them?

Still doesnt give them the right to use a racist word does it.

Jimboy69 07-06-2007 11:55 PM

Do you believe there should be equality? If so then no one should say it. Lets bury it once and for all. But of course that's not going to happen. So this problem will probs never be resolved

It's ignorance then, what justification has she actually got for using that word? there is not one! it's a racist term with a horrible meaning behind and it causes offence.

Nobody should be using that disgusting word. There's nothing funny about it.

Are you referring to me? If anything, I'm most against 'these disgusting words'! I'm not making excuses for Emily! I think that what she said was horrible!

Btw - sorry to have a go if it wasn't me, I'm just a little confused, lol.

You just dont understand. Under no circumstance do white ppl have the right or justification to use it bcos it is a racist word used against black ppl.

By black ppl using it tho, amongst themselves, it does not cause offense as it is used as a term of endearment bcos they have turned the word round to be used among themselves to take the power out of its original meaning, and they know among themselves that they are not using it to cause offense or discrimination or hurt. Whereas if it becomes allowed among white people it destroys the whole meaning for black ppl as white ppl simply cannot share the understanding of what it is to be black and ancestors of black ppl used for slavery

Jimboy69 08-06-2007 12:00 AM

I'm trying to be fair. Yes it is an awful word. And yes it blatantly is ignorance on her part. She didn't mean it in a racist way. And so She should be forgiven. **** it, she's been punished. End of.

InTheHood 08-06-2007 12:01 AM

It didn't offend me as such as Emily is stupid. I can't take a stupid person seriously.

However, Charley's decision to continue it, did.

People call me malteser head (because i'm black and bald) which I think is quite amusing.

Admittedly it's only people that know me, and that's probably the issue here, not what she said, but she said it to someone she had no idea how they would take it.

BB have to be even if everything they do, so Charley's imitation of Chanelle's northern voice should also be brought up, as was the immitation of Shilpa's in CBB7.

All this is, is one big setup, to make BB look like they are dealing with the issue of racism, after they were severely warned after the Shilpa incident.

JUST BCOS IT IS USED IN MUSIC BY BLACK RAPPERS DOES NOT GIVE WHITE people THE RIGHT TO USE IT!!!!

I asked u if ur black bcos u said this - "if you know the meaning of it and say it to another black person: surely it brings back terrible connotations, and you all then sit down and think about what you've said?"

as you are not black u do not understand what it means, feels like to have the word said to u therefore u cannot comment on what "terrible connotations" it may or may not bring back, because it was not your race that was put thru slavery.
"JUST BCOS IT IS USED IN MUSIC BY BLACK RAPPERS DOES NOT GIVE WHITE people THE RIGHT TO USE IT!!!!"
I know, that's what I said...

I understand what you're saying. I know it's a horrible word, I know the history of the word, it's a sensitive issue. I'll drop it now because this really isn't going anywhere, and I'm tired

Thanks for the interesting discussion :spin2:

I think you are right and wrong.

As a black man, I think it is wrong for ANYONE to use it, not just white people.

As far as i'm concerned, if someone doesn't do something, then it's not encouraging another person to do so.

I do understand what u are saying too.
Ofcourse it has got to a point now where others will think it is acceptable to use because black ppl do. The difference is I can understand why black ppl have come to use it.

The point im trying to get accross , as some ppl seem to think it true, is that just because black ppl use it , it does not excuse white ppl from using it as the way black ppl do use it has its own reasons in which white ppl cannot identify
