But by 2021
whoever is PM
will say NO.

Let them have their referendum, the situation has changed since the last time and they deserve the chance to decide if they want to stick with us or with the EU.

But with Brexit done
the PM of the UK, whoever it is,
will not allow the Vote

The UK is highly undemocratic for the smaller nations and constitutionally dysfunctional.

Scotland is a smaller, uh, "nation", and it has its own things like free university and giving votes to 16, year olds.

what you guys need is to get a UK wide vote on it, you would be out before you could say ach aye de nooo :hehe:

I was referring to Oliver's suggestion that Scottish Indy and Brexit are directly comparable / the idea that the EU had as much control over the UK as Westminster has over Scotland... more pointing out that people seem to believe that the EU is FAR more controlling than it actually is.

And there's no need to be racist :nono:. It's "och", and also, the Scottish dialect is phonetically complete and so we enunciate the "th" sound and thus would never say "de noo". Were not Irish :hmph:

It's because us Irish have hung onto a part of our language and there's no such sound in Irish as how th sounds in English. In Irish the t just becomes silent and it's just the h sound :hee:

So how much control does the UK as a whole have over Scotland, what UK-wide laws etc do you oppose, apart from Brexit?

I oppose the entire UK benefits system, for a start, and UK wide (London-centric) economic policies have been utterly disastrous for Scotland over the last four decades. It's not about "wanting to change laws". Scotland and the bulk of England are socially an economically very different and English policies CONSISTENTLY fail to bother with implications north of the border. It has improved marginally with devolution and is still improving, until recently I would have accepted devo-max (full devolution of taxation and the social security budget) as an OK alternative to full indy... but Brexit isn't a minor consideration and Scotland will suffer badly from being locked into the isolationist hillbilly economy of the detached UK rather than the EU common market. There's no "apart from Brexit" any more. It is a major consideration.

What is your point? It’s called devolution sweetie. Some powers are devolved but it’s not enough.

im amazed wales are not calling for this too

They know where their bread is buttered, although you would wonder when some Welsh farmers voted for Brexit leaving them at the mercy of Westminster for subsidies

IFS: Scotland to get billions of English income tax
First Minister Nicola Sturgeon will publish her taxation plans today but the Institute for Fiscal Studies says that the recent deal between the UK and Scottish governments is unfair to taxpayers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

I mean... westminster plundered 2200 billion £ (yes, Billion) by todays prices of Scottish oil over the last 50 years... so you're just repaying your debts .

Oliver_W 28-04-2019 09:38 AM

I was listening to LBC earlier, a lady from the SNP said Scotland would raise taxes to make up for money lost if they left the UK ... why would anyone want that?

I am a strong admirer of Nicola Sturgeon.
I think she does a really good job as First Minister.

As for another independence vote, I think if she has that passed in Holyrood.
It's a disgrace the UK government could refuse it.

We have this English votes for English laws in Parliament now.
It would be shameful if the elected governing body of the Scottish devolved Parliament, was refused a new independence vote by English, Irish and Welsh MPs.

England does dictate to the rest of the UK.
With it's massively greater population as opposed to the 3 other, when it suits, so called 3 other equal Nations of the UK.

If I lived in Scotland, I'd be with Nicola Sturgeon and the SNP all the way on this.
Listening to the acidic comments I've witnessed from in the main the South of England against Scotland is frankly sickening.

Scotland has been taken for granted, and been the testing dumping ground of dubious policies by the 2 main Parties of the UK for way too long and it should be the case now that enough is enough now, as to that.
In my opinion.

I'm thinking of all the jobs we can claw back. All the government departments that have moved to Scotland... the Mint and the DVLA in Wales... BBC Cymru… BBC Scotland... They surely don't think they'll keep all that if they leave the union?

bots 28-04-2019 11:18 AM

the financial aspects of independence won't enter into it. I can see an independence vote being successful purely from the mess that has been on display daily at westminster. I don't want to be ruled by that lot, not for a moment, and the feeling from the folks in Scotland will be magnified 10 fold

Cherie 28-04-2019 11:21 AM

On a practical level how will the border be policed, NI style checkpoints, a Trump style wall :omgno: If Scotland does achieve independence and then subsequently gets accepted back into the EU, free movement will pose a significant problem?
