I mean, if you think about it, TV has only really been a part of people's lives for 50-or-so years and even cinema, only 100-or-so. Music predates written history. I'm not sure the concept of living without music even makes any real sort of sense, it's baked into the human experience.
That said, so is storytelling... go back thousands of years and "shows" still existed, the just took the form of tales passed around sitting at campfires... they still developed over time, there were still "new episodes" and new stories all the time. Again they're part of what makes us human.
