Evidently we need to make it so illegals can't force their way into vehicles heading this way, so as to preserve their lives.

RIP to them

Kizzy 23-10-2019 02:23 PM

I think it would have been quick, in a metal box they wouldve run out if oxygen :( awful thing to happen I really hope the driver wasn't aware they were stowing away.

I seriously doubt you'd get 39 stoways in your truck without knowing about it

It's a bit gross to frame this story like that.

If they were stowaways on a randomer's truck then the driver wouldn't have been arrested for murder. It's very grim to use this story to push an agenda that places blame on the victims themselves.

Drivers will collect a lot of cash for sneaking in illegal immigrants

Drivers have a responsibility for ensuring they have no illegals on board. It's a big fine otherwise. It's easy enough for a driver to check the integrity of their vehicle

Cherie 23-10-2019 02:59 PM

Hard to understand how the driver of the lorry wouldn't have known the unit was sealed airtight

Ammi 23-10-2019 03:12 PM

...there is one report saying it was a ‘chiller lorry’ with an inside temperature of minus 25 degrees...

If that is the case though, what did the driver think he was going to do with guaranteed 39 dead bodies, I think maybe the chiller bit was off but he didn't factor in that they would run out of air or something  which is very odd but I cant imagine that he loaded up 39 took the cash and then thought he would wing it with 39 bodies at the other end

The lorry went straight from Zeebrugge to Purfleet, it did not go via Ireland

A 25-year-old driver from Northern Ireland was arrested on suspicion of murder.

Local police and community sources told the Guardian that the arrested man was believed to be Mo Robinson, from Portadown, County Armagh. Essex police declined to comment.

Twosugars 23-10-2019 03:43 PM

On Wednesday afternoon the Bulgarian ministry of foreign affairs said the truck was registered in the coastal town of Varna. It was registered under the name of a company owned by a female Irish citizen, Reuters reported.

The victims, found at the Waterglade industrial park in Grays, were all adults apart from one teenager, Essex police said.

Not that keen on naming anyone without confirmation from the police if I am honest

Dont know about evil Arista. But certainly stupid and greedy.
Wonder if it was his first time or there was a regular shuttle service going on from Bulgaria.
It is close to Turkey and the refugee route from the middle east

:nono: the police have just asked people not to speculate as to his identity, he might be completely innocent apart from not doing his job very well

[The lorry and its container were
removed from the scene in Essex]

Josy 23-10-2019 07:50 PM

So sad all those lives lost :/

The lorry driver has been released without charge, but due to the media everyone now thinks hes a murderer, mud sticks.

Livia 23-10-2019 08:22 PM

I was surprised that he was arrested on suspicion of murder. Murder means he intended for them to die, that it was pre-meditated. And now they've released him? After his name and photo's been published everywhere. Just look at the conclusions reached in this thread.

First they said it came in via Hollyhead, then they thought it came across the channel from Belgium... it was registered in Bulgaria two years ago and hasn't been in that country since.

It's as mysterious as it is horrific.

Jessica. 23-10-2019 08:31 PM

I am so shocked and saddened by this story. I looked into it and it seems that the container was shipped over but not with the lorry, it was only attached to the lorry when it was already in the UK, is that right? Then the deaths would have been caused by whoever shipped it over?

People are making jokes/flaming in the comments of Mo's instagram pictures, it's awful that his name and social media were posted by news companies if he is innocent of any crimes.

Kizzy 23-10-2019 08:40 PM

I find it odd why people are so shocked by this, but loads of 'economic migrants' and their children die regularly from drowning crossing to the UK in dingies, which are equally horrific and tragic deaths... and there just isn't the same reaction imo.

How many have died crossing the channel in dinghies?

MTVN 23-10-2019 08:47 PM

I suspect what happened was this guy was probably offered a significant amount of money to pick up a container 'no questions asked'..

I am horrified by all deaths caused by there not being an easy legal way for desperate people to get out of dangerous countries. It hasn't been established whether or not the people in the lorry were migrants though. They could have been in there against their will.

Cherie 23-10-2019 09:08 PM

Mo will be suing I expect and good luck to him, bad enough that he would have been the first to find the bodies but to be inaccurately named by the media as well as his address given out
