It's just like the Danny Baker situation - if you're smart enough to have an arsenal of Measure for Measure quotes at your disposal to use in any given argument, you're smart enough to know that calling a black person an ape as part of said argument isn't going to be construed in the way you intended (assuming his intention wasn't "to be racist", of course)

It's as simple as that

Ammi 30-01-2020 04:06 AM

...I read about this yesterday...and really, what MB said above...a tweet has to be actually typed out and sent as well so it’s a very deliberate action...sad way for his career to end but it is what it is if he tweeted it, it’s his own doing...

GoldHeart 30-01-2020 04:49 PM

It baffles me that people in the public eye especially in important jobs still continue to be offensive, and try to pass it off as a mistake . A news reporter said the N word supposedly by accident on air when talking about Koby Bryan's death.

How did he think people would take a black person being called an ape ??, Rosanne was another idiot who did the same thing and ruined her career. It's their own doing.

They're adults responsible for their own words .

he man whose Twitter exchange is thought to have led to Alastair Stewart's resignation says an apology would have been enough.
On Wednesday, ITN announced that Stewart would be standing down as a presenter of ITV News following "errors of judgement".

It comes after an exchange on Twitter between the 67-year-old and a man called Martin Shapland.

Enjoy your retirement Alastair

An apology wouldn't have been enough for them at all. That person bombarded itv with tweets.

ITN has emphasised that veteran newsreader Alastair Stewart left the broadcaster over multiple “errors of judgment” in his use of social media – rather a single incident – after supporters of the presenter turned on an individual they blamed for his departure.

Stewart resigned on Wednesday, three weeks after he sent a tweet to a black man including the term “angry ape”. The message, quoting the Shakespeare play Measure for Measure, was sent to political adviser Martin Shapland during a disagreement between the two.

However, an ITN source said: “It was never about a single tweet, it was always errors plural.”

I was following this quite closely and honestly left me SO disappointed to see so many attack the woman who simply stammered her words.

For one, why would she say that live on TV? Secondly saying that word makes zero sense to what she was saying.

She simply fluffed a line and said LA Nakers instead of Lakers, people have slowed down the footage and proved it. Cancel culture on twitter is repulsive.

Thats no good fella
it ain't up to you
ITV have ruled on this
he is Disgraced and Sacked

Alf 31-01-2020 07:57 AM

I think I'm so sophisticated, cause I'm living my life like a good homosapien

But all around me everybody's multiplying, and thy're walking around like flies man

So I'm no better than the animals sitting in their cages in the zoo man

Because compared to the flowers and the birds and the trees, I am an Apeman

Alf 31-01-2020 08:02 AM

I don't feel safe in this World no more
I don't want to die in a nuclear war
I want to sail away to a distant shore
And make like an Apeman

Alf 31-01-2020 08:09 AM

Cause compared to the Sun that sits in the sky

Compared to the clouds as they roll by

Compared to the bugs and the spiders and flies

I am an Apeman

I've seen various other examples of people stammering their words and saying the wrong thing, and even then I still think how did you get that wrong :conf: .

How does she accidentally say the N word instead of Nakers ? how did that slip happen? .

It's not like saying the F bomb or Sh*t , all those words are classed as swearing especially offensive before watershed.

It makes me think behind the scenes at the news room , people are dropping the N word as jokes . It feels like she's been around it .

Remember when Emily called Charley the N word in BB8 , she said it casually then she gasped laughed and was like "omg I just called you that " . But she said her friends called her it , still doesn't excuse it but I think it might be a similar thing with the newsreader.

No loss tbh. Every ITN with him sounded like the newsreader from V For Vendetta. More personal opinion and random asides than actual reporting.

A brilliant video on this from the brilliant Youtuber, Voltaire's Ghost.

If you have a spare half hour, give it a watch, sacrifice Emmerdale for it.

There are people dying all over the world, Corona virus could end up hitting us all, children being blown to bits in Syria and Yemen, people are dying because they haven't got a drink of clean water... and someone had their feeling hurt by a word.

Alf 26-02-2020 10:11 AM

We live in a modern day witch hunt culture.

Does this relativism apply to antisemitism too?
I see you took a somewhat different view in the Fury thread.
