Not scared of getting it but scared of the repercussions felt by others if I do.

no-one likes uncertainty, and things couldn't be more uncertain. It's not just about catching the virus, the whole structure of society, it's economics and it's priorities are going to get a reboot as a result of this

Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if there are some permanent changes to "open travel" around the world. At the very least there will be a huge shift in multinational businesses to doing business via web conferencing rather than flying around in person, and we may also see a "voluntary" drop in international tourism for a long time (people won't be forced not to... They just won't want to).

Maybe controversial to say it but... The drop in air travel will be huge in terms of climate change :umm2:. We fly far, far too much.

No, people are overreacting especially those selfish ones who go on that unnecessary hamstering :notimpressed: :bored:

Well that's where it gets complicated, the people who STARTED the hoarding were over-reacting, but at this point it's not an over-reaction to try to make sure you're stocked up... Simply because the shelves are emptying fast and it's going to become increasingly hard to get things. Not because of the virus, not because of social distancing, but purely because of hoarding. Exactly like the "bread incident". You have to hoard because of hoarders, thus becoming a hoarder and compounding the issue.

Its stupid and frustrating but  if you don't get some staples in now you probably won't be able to get them at all.

Nicky91 14-03-2020 08:37 AM

people who hamster, need to be arrested from now on, and then it is over pretty quickly with that hoarding/hamstering from stores

How can you tell if they are or not, though? Most big stores here have limited the number of certain things people can buy, but they just send in multiple family members one at a time and go from shop to shop getting one each time... Then come back the next day and repeat.

user104658 14-03-2020 08:43 AM

I also love that the German word for panic buying is apparently "Hamsterkauf" :joker:

Cherie 14-03-2020 08:46 AM

As soon as it hit Italy badly it was hard to see how it was not going to go the same way here, human nature being what it is the panic buying was inevitable. Not particularly afraid of the virus, just hoping some normality will return soon, and that the death toll wont be too high, and that we learn from mistakes that were made this time round

Yes Tesco’s ‘rationing’ policy was worthless, also a limit of 5, who needs 5 packs of TR or Pasta in one hit ..stupid

Vaccine-less herd immunity scares the sh1t out of me. I have vulnerable relatives that probably wouldn't make it through if we persist with the eugenicists wet dream of murderous pseudoscience.

Crimson Dynamo 14-03-2020 08:54 AM

I have just had a call from my mum, she has run out bog roll and has diarrhoea :umm2:

So now i have to go on the search and take some to her.

Nice of you to be so caring

It's OK, I'm on Prep.

But I miss sports, and concerts I was supposed to go to.
I know on my part I'm following the instructions from our government, so I'm doing my best. It's a question of luck sometimes. Might get it, might not get it, we'll see.
I hope everyone on Tibb will be OK!

Ammi 14-03-2020 09:00 AM

...the focus of stock piling seems to be with medication/medical supplies now...

There isn't a lot of choice at this point though, there is no vaccine and it spreads too easily to halt, the social distancing and things like closing schools and workplaces isn't to halt the virus it's to ease the strain on ICU units so that every severe case that can survive, does survive. The reason the death rate is high in Italy is that (horrifyingly) a lot of people who would have pulled through in ICU are dying in the hospital corridors. There are also people dying of OTHER things because all of the beds are full of Covid patients.

But unfortunately all of the measures are about slowing ICU admissions to a manageable level. It's still going to move through the population at some rate. Realistically a vaccine is at least 6 months away or more and whatever measures are taken, they can't continue for 6 months, or (being blunt) Covid will be the least of our problems.

...I smiled actually when I saw something similar with loo rolls when the stock piling started...there were still quite a few packs of some of the more expensive Andrex ones but not really much else...I think with Boots though and general medical supplies..?..it started as fairly focused on specific things like generic pain relief, as you’ve said....but there’s less focus now and it’s becoming ALL ShELVEs....I think we’re going to have little trades going on like with football cards...?....one multivitamin bottle for a 12 pack of ibuprofen....deal or no deal, TS...?...

I'm basically agreeing with everything you're writing re: coronavirus

Crimson Dynamo 14-03-2020 09:18 AM

if you need paracetamol try small local pharmacies as the chavs wont think to go there and they have good stocks

caprimint 14-03-2020 09:20 AM

Even off-licenses too... I've seen them selling hand sanitizer and masks
