She can say what she likes :) Just like I can say she's wasting her platform by not tackling stuff that matters.

Also I had to google what "a Karen" was, middle aged privileged white woman, Brie Larson is 30 years old, short shelf life us women have. . .

I love Ricky Gervais....his humour is often near the mark but he is right about so many things...and he was right to make the comments about this pitiful twat.

Odd how he can blather about Brie being a "privileged white woman" but god forbid Brie speak out about the "privileged white men". Almost like someone's feeling very insecure about themselves. :idc:

Exactly, I'll guess the answer would be something like - well I'm not talking about women's rights at all and I'm not a woman. Oddly though, a lot of times when women talk about women's rights, a common question asked is - but what about mens rights?

Oliver_W 15-04-2020 09:42 AM

If I was a celebrity I'd love to tackle such issues, but what can a common-or-garden faggo like me do about these things?

Cop out answer. If you're so concerned about FGM, why don't you join a voluntary group that campaigns to stop it or something like that, surely would be more productive than just complaining about how Beie Larson should be talking about it?

If there was something like that local to me I sure would, but as well as working I also do stuff with the RSPB and Wildlife Trust, I'm no Superman :joker:

I'm just saying, it's really not anyone else's place to say what a person should or should not be talking about and other issues existing certainly shouldn't be used as a counter argument to her points. It's such a non argument and really is only a tool to try and shut her down. I mean there are plenty of celebrities who don't talk about any issues at all but nobody tells them, - Hey why aren't using your platform to talk about important issues? Because the truth is people don't care if celebrities are using their platforms or not

I guess a comeback toward me could be "why are you looking after your local countryside when you could defend the Amazon"

You don't need to be in a local group to take a stand, the internet is a thing, you could be a part of a movement if you actually cared about it.

The hatred towards Brie Larson is peak incel culture. Captain Marvel is a female focused film and one that attempted to say something about feminism and gender but it didn't really work since it felt like a man wrote it and it lacked sincerity in what it was trying to say because of it.

If Brie Larrson didn't speak about women's rights when promoting the film, it would be strange.

Oliver_W 15-04-2020 12:38 PM

I think Captain Marvel is a fine film, and I like her in most interviews, it's not her fault Americans don't get dry humour. Captain Marvel is just another cookie-cutter MCU film,it's pathetic that it spawned so many videos.

I wish I'd chosen another bloody example now of privileged celebs complaining :joker:

I agree but what baffles me is that there seems to be a perception that WW "did it better" when WW is about as feminist as tea on the table and a nice bath ready when Daddy gets home from the office.

Of course, Gal Gadot was quiet & demure in interviews and let Chris Pine (the actual protagonist of WW, by the way) do 90% of the talking like a good whamen, and thus pleased the zeitgeist.

It's also probably because Gal Gadot is beautiful. Like it or not, looks play a big part in how people react.

Moreso with women, unfortunately.

I actually do think WW did it better. The whole point of that film is that success comes from co-operation. Steve Trevor couldn't have done what he did if Diana wasn't there to fight Aries and Diana couldn't have prevented disaster if Steve didn't play his part. Both characters had their flaws and weaknesses and it was through co-operation that they saved the day.

I always took that film to be one that's empowering to women without demeaning anyone basically. Diana gets judged for being a woman, she succeeds in what she does and she extends a hand to those she proved wrong enabling those who judged her for her gender to learn from their mistakes. It's empowering without having to dunk on anyone else. (Still cringe when I think about that cockpit line from Captain Marvel).

Obviously I'm a man so my insight is limited on this issue but I always thought that WW did it well in a way that would probably win over people that would have been put off by Captain Marvel's more brash and hackneyed message. You'll never convince incels but I reckon WW would have succeeded in winning over more people in the middle.

I love WW, that and Shazam are the only DC movies I legit like.

But yet you feel Brie Larson, a woman you don't know, should be doing something? How odd.
