She really is the most hated woman for me so far in my lifetime ! Vile nasty woman ~ the damage she caused and the 1000's of lives she wrecked.
I still wouldn't waste an egg on her unless it was rotten

Social media and the internet is not represention of true feelings.. if you’d go by how popular someone or parties are online Labour would have won 75% and Brexit would have won 75%. The true opinion of the population is often very different.. As someone who has lived in Liverpool I’ve seen a lot of older folks praise Thatcher and believe her to be a fantastic leader (people who actually were adults at the time of her leadership rather than a lot of forum members here who hadn’t even been born and just read social media to inform their opinions)

She was widely hated long before social media

I highly doubt that, literally everything I've read on the subject of the tories, thatcher and Liverpool in recent history is contrary to your opinion.

You don't win the biggest popularity contest in the UK by being widely hated

Yes... I can't find one positive opinion on the subject. From the riots of the 80s, poll tax, unemployment, industry decimation, managed decline, outsourcing, blacklisting and Hillsborough there is not one area where the people of Liverpool express approval for the actions of thatcher or the govt.

Feel free to educate me if you are aware of any.

Oh, I'm sure she's certainly popular in the certain places, where she didn't decimate

That would be a true representation.

The standard of living for us working class improved under Thatcher more than any other PM.

I understand at the time that people were angry about the mines shutting down, because at the time they wern't to know that by the end of Thatchers reign that their standards of living would be much improved. At the time they were concerned for their futures, a bit like the protesters at the weekend, whom I think you may have been against?

By the end of Thatchers reign there were not that many people screaming to open the mines back up, almost everybody had moved on pretty quickly. Their Double glazing, central heating, indoor toilets, home telephones, microwave ovens, washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers, televisions in every room, video recorders, satatalite television, stack systems, 3 piece suits and foreign holidays saw to that. Many working class didn't have most of that when Thatcher came in, they did by the time she'd left.

She was the daughter of a corner shop greengrocer, no wonder she gave us some tick, she let us put it on the slate.

Under Thatcher, we prospered.

They should consider throwing tomatoes instead, given that tomatoes can cause bronze disease which can lead to the degradation and destruction of bronze objects.

Margaret Thatcher was a twat in life and she doesn't deserve to be honoured in death. I can only hope the statue is vandalised beyond belief. Her death already provided a public service by creating a toilet in the graveyard she is buried, we don't need another pricey toilet erected in her honour.

They are not that Clever

bots 02-12-2020 03:28 AM

She was complex, she did some good things, she also did some truly awful things. Power went to her head and if people thought Pritti was a bully they should compare and contrast to maggie .... no contest

Ammi 02-12-2020 07:31 AM

...while the world is in starvation and a pandemic etc, £300,000 is spent on a statue that has to be elevated to an extent that it can’t easily be vandalised, as is being expected it will be ...really, this is a part of what makes a country great again...what a crazy world, when will we ever learn...

The level of hatred in this thread aimed at a woman is truly shocking.

Why would the sex of a divisive political figure make any difference as to how they are reacted to for past decisions.
Statements like that geared to make people look sexist only serve to highlight your sexism.

joeysteele 02-12-2020 08:06 AM

The one thing I'd give Thatcher and she was PM before I was born.
Is I cannot find her in any way setting out to discriminate against or humiliate the sick, and disabled, the way the last 3 PMs have over the last 10 years.

The other thing about her is, she threw out the vote in 1979 which was a narrow vote for devolution in Scotland.

She apparently despised referenda and felt they were a failure of government.
However she refused to implement that devolution referendum result.

So she had more conviction, right or wrong than the last 3 wastes of political space who have been Prime Minister of the UK.
She'd never have carried out a 3.8% vote to leave the EU, then again she'd never have held the referendum.

Back to statues, I just personally see no need for them.
The initial costs of them obscene at times, then added likely costs of the unveiling.

Just set up a fund related to them for people to remember them by and use funds to help others.
Not leave what I'd term as often eyesores, for birds to mess on, councils to have to clean.

In this day and age, there's many ways to project an individual after they've died without shoving them in public areas.

Put whatever, where those bothered about any person immortalised this way, in a private setting where those who wish to, go and see it.
Not push it into everyone's faces in public.

This woman was fiercely divisive, there's those who think she was great and those with deep, very deep hate for her setting people and groups of workers against other workers.

For me, looking back, overall I would have hated her privatisation programme of essential services such as Gas, Electricity and Water.

I think all that did was allow competition to just endlessly raise prices.
With service suffering too.

She also used Scotland as a dumping ground for her extreme policies too.

So had I been born and of voting age, I would have voted for her in 1979 but maybe not by the time we got to 1987.

No though,no support for a statue of her from me..we need more unifying symbols across the UK, not more deliberately divisive ones.

Not at all, If you are aiming that amount of hatred at a woman your are taking it to another level of lowest of the low.

I don’t have a problem with strong woman I have a problem with weak men

Again why does someone's gender make a difference on how you react to their actions in a historical context?

Personally I wouldn't describe her as 'strong', to me strong is fair, compassionate, diplomatic and dare I say it patriotic... outsourcing industry the way she did decimated the country and laid barren the future for swathes of the country. With no proviso for future job creation, just added generations of people to insecure employment or poverty.

That is the tip of the iceberg too, and there are numerous decisions that can only be described as heartless and cruel, she was anything but strong she may have been the iron lady but for me that relates to how cold, rigid and dark she was.. nothing else.

Beastie 02-12-2020 08:51 AM

Can imagine Arista having a soft spot for Thatcher.

Hmm, yes the early days (right through the 90's and 00's, in fact) offered up a lot of carrots. We didn't see or realise the eventual consequences of free-range neoliberal capitalism until a few decades post-Thatcher. We're sure starting to see it now, though, with dramatic effect ;).
