Only if they originally barged into someone else's house with guns, said "Ha ha this is my house now!" and then kidnapped some other people from down the street to make them do all the cooking and cleaning.
I don't necessarily agree with cold-hard-cash generational inherited debt, however, in this case as the family is still occupying the land, I think it would be reasonable enough to ask that it's given back. If it was going to cause huge financial issues then that would be another matter - but I suspect he could give the land back and still be a very wealthy chap.
