Like yeah, if the parents are going to be given money or vouchers, there should be something in place to ensure the money goes toward feeding the family, but that point can be made in a way which doesn't suggest they'd otherwise spend it on "booze and fags"

Well yeah, just give a voucher that can only be used on food, it's not that complicated. Clearly their plan backfired because the private companies scammed them instead......

...or, they’re very ‘selective’ with the private companies and there may be ‘personal interests’ involved, could also be a thing...this government is such a self serving one ...

Which is why it's doubly insulting to imply that the parents would drink or smoke the money rather than feed their children

I would blame the company providing the meals.

Yes
just go to Lidl or Aldi

arista 12-01-2021 11:00 AM

Give them 8 mini Sausages in beans tin
that would help.

...I can’t imagine what’s in those sausages but I doubt they would provide much sustenance for a child...

Cherie 12-01-2021 11:06 AM

is the 30.00 allocated for one child? and just for lunch?

My son spends £30.00 a week on food for the whole week for himself

The savvy ones will sell the vouchers for cash...

Not if they get vouchers that can only be spent on food....... Looks like these private companies approved by the government aren't better

My son and I were talking about this, when he was in secondary school he used to buy dinner tickets off one of his classmates

Charity highlights the failures of a government to provide, if Tory supporters are saying that Marcus should put forth his own money to take care of British children then that's them admitting that the Tories are incapable of doing so, thus admitting tory incompetence.

It's a shame that people who are struggling have to listen to attitudes like this all the time

It's easier to look down on the less fortunate then to admit that most of us are just a few bad days away from being them.

Well especially now in these times

The assumption that poor people are desperate to starve their kids so they can buy kestrel lager and hit up crack dens is a really abhorrent lie promulgated by the rw press.

Absolutely right you are there.

I applaud Rashford's efforts and him publicly raising this.

Those parcels look woefully inadequate.really, almost even insulting.
Glad it's been exposed.
Things just seem to go from bad to worse in some issues and cases.

Let's not be naive here, there will be some that will exploit any system, that's not saying all will exploit it, just like these catering companies, there are many that followed the rule to the letter but that doesn't stop us from criticising those that haven't, many parents will do the same and there are sadly some that won't, burying that is not helpful to the children involved.

Better we look down in case we start looking up eh?

Yeah taking a look at the picture, the absolute most generous total I could come up with for what's there is £7. And that would be steep.

user104658 12-01-2021 12:27 PM

Can I just add as a little celtic brag - Scotland is still giving cold hard cash in lieu of school meals to those who qualify for free meals. No shame-vouchers, no boxes of scraps.

*that's celtic not Celtic, before LT panics and breaks out the flute.
