I think this is partly because the VAST majority of murders are committed by "someone the person knows" - especially when women are killed at home - and the chances of being randomly killed like was described are very, very low. Straight away it reminded me an awful lot of the Oscar Pistorius case.
Secondly we've all seen so many TrueCrime documentaries on Netflix now and it always turns out to be something like this so suspicions are brought up immediately.
