I wonder why that guy is here at all, if he is that bothered about it.... did he not know about it before he applied to a Uni in the UK?

but Oxford you know, will look good on his CV :hee:

Amy Jade 09-06-2021 12:43 PM

students are getting death threats for deciding to take an ugly picture down?

This country is embarrassing.

Tom4784 09-06-2021 12:44 PM

Saying the country is tearing itself apart because someone voted to take down a painting isn't outrage?

Anyone outraged over a picture being taken down needs to really evaluate themselves.

Beso 09-06-2021 01:46 PM

If a picture of a little old lady offends you, you need your head examined and you need to reevaluate your life.

I wouldn’t want a picture of somebody else’s grandmother in my living space either

Why Now?

Ammi 09-06-2021 02:12 PM

…this is really silly, it’s only a decorative picture that was chosen and bought and put up by the students of 2013…only a few years ago, it has no meaning and no history…it’s in no way a part of the college as such….it’s something that was liked at the time to decorate the common room and now something different is wanted for that room…did we even know it was up there from 2013….?…no, I very much doubt that…but its still preferred to be there…people didn’t know it was there, though…but just leave it, oi….…seriously, life is way too fleeting for this…

They want it removed because ‘she represents recent colonial history’.
They haven’t a clue (Oxford - really?) They should want it kept up then because she is the one who has done more than any other single person to change Empire into the mutually supportive, multi racial and wonderfully diverse institution of the Commonwealth.

bots 09-06-2021 02:48 PM

if i remember my history correctly, it was Thomas Wolsey (the head of the catholic church in england) that founded Oxford University, and he basically raised the funds by taxing the english poor who couldnt afford it and by taking bribes from hostile foreign powers to sway the opinion of Henry 8th. So Oxford University isn't historically renowned for it's moral stance going right back to it's beginnings

They don't seem all that outraged to me, they had a democratic vote and took it down. Now, if you want to see outrage, look at those people that think that defunding universities and declaring higher education worthless because a picture was taken down.

Crimson Dynamo 09-06-2021 03:58 PM

I mean I'd hate to think these students aren't at Oxford because they firmly believe that it will give them an unfair privileged leg up in their career at the expense of others?

I'm sure they just like the Town...

To be fair, University in the UK isn’t as pay-to-win as the US, anyone can go to Oxbridge if they get the grades. It doesn’t cost six-figure sums or require scholarships like the big US schools.

Not that there isn’t still an element of privilege of course - kids from better off homes and schools have an advantage in getting the best grades - but it shouldn’t really be ASSUMED. I know a couple of people from “normal backgrounds” who went to Oxford/Cambridge. My wife could have gone to Oxford for her masters but uprooting the kids to Engerland was not an option :hee:.

They weren't outraged or they'd have ripped it down or burnt it.

They had a democratic vote and as a result the picture has been removed and put in storage.

Beso 09-06-2021 05:56 PM

Someone was outraged enough to start the motion to remove it...that cant be denied.

2013 "Some students decided to decorate the common room with a pic of the Queen"

2021 "Some students decided to decorate the common room with something else"

That's literally it.

Meanwhile in other news... the tories are breaking the law... again.

You will find there was exceptional circumstances surrounding that...ie, emergency situations.

I would have done the same myself in that situation, a situation where speed was of an essence.
