If the producers really had the balls to make a diverse show, they should have gone all the way and set it in Harad, which is Middle Earth's Africa. That way, they could have a majority black show! Make it about Sauron corrupting their people, and the two Blue Wizards fight against him.

Apart from broad strokes, there's so little Tolkien wrote about that, that they could basically write whatever they wanted without pissing people off.

Black people just existing isn't woke, so using modern casting conventions as an excuse to pre-emptively hate the show is just stupid. Their casting makes no sense when looking at Middle Earth lore, but it's the Current Year so get over it :joker:

The casting isn't the source of my scepticism, but I can understand why other Tolkien nerds would have a problem with it.

Look I get not liking the look of the Show, or hating the Show once watching it.

I just honestly don't get why some people on Social Media seemed to be hating it just purely off a Trailer.

Tbh they wouldn't do a majority black show because nowadays in Hollywood everyone is a token.

I've just finished the 1st episode and now on to the 2nd. I'm really enjoying it

Niamh. 07-09-2022 12:23 PM

Watched the 1st episode last night, slow mover so far (I won't judge it on that but so far House of the Dragon started better) It looks fantastic, I'm enjoying the new species(?) we didn't know in LOTRs. That's about all I can say so far about it as not a lot happened really, visually beautiful though

yes, its cinematic is how i would describe it. The 2nd episode builds a bit and I think the 3rd will be great

Harfoots are a type of Hobbit and are described as having browner skin than other types of Hobbit.

Yeah started picking up in Ep 3, they're really worlds to get lost in

Oliver_W 16-09-2022 02:37 PM

I kind of feel like it's "not made for" Tolkien Nerds such as I, for all I can see is all the things they're getting wrong :joker: Galadriel and Elrond were never really like that, especially at the time in which the show is set.

Like I get that the showrunners only have the rights to Hobbit, LotR, and the Appendecies; they literally can't adapt anything from the Silmarillion, it has to be based on what's written in those books or fully made up by themselves. But still! It's at least pretending to be set in Arda. That said, it may as well be a generic fantasy, hardly anything really cements it in Tolkien's writing.

But worst of all, I find it a bit boring. There are hardly any engaging or likable characters. Galadriel seems like she's about to demand to see the manager :joker: Elrond is a moron. I guess I like the Dwarf Queen, and Lenny Henry would be likeable even if he played an SS officer.

bots 16-09-2022 04:40 PM

i'm just enjoying the series for what it is

Oliver_W 16-09-2022 05:28 PM

Nah it's mostly a Me-Thing rather than the show's fault :joker:

Niamh. 28-09-2022 09:26 AM

Ok last episode was boring as **** tbh. Doesn't hold a candle to HOTD

Yeah, basically all of the characters are still in exactly the same place at the end of ep5 than they were at the end of ep4.

It says a lot that HoD has a sprawling discussion thread, here and other fora of which I'm a member, while RoP just stagnates.

There's really nothing to say a part from it looking nice and even that's getting annoying now  The dramatic music with the beauty shot. I watched HOTD and ROP back to back on Tuesday and when HOTD ended I was like ah damn is it over already but during ROP I found myself checking to see how long was left
