In the rules of the game of football, Robertson was clearly playing Benzema onside.

That's always been the rule. Usually the goalkeeper is one of the two.

I played in defence all my playing days and never knew that was the rule. That's the first time I've ever seen that.

The ball came to Benzema off the Liverpool player anyway, so the goal should have stood.

I just assumed the rule was that you've got to be behind the last defender, I never knew the keeper came into it.

Not sure the Madrid guy even touched it so not sure why he's offside from a ball that ricocheted off 2/3 Liverpool players

It is the rule its just very rare that the keeper is ahead of the last defender

That's probably why I've never come across it before. It's not something I was ever coached nor seen before.
