Here is another view of the ship. It's huge and will have a ridiculous weight on board. It's impossible to manoeuvre something like that quickly

As a former American this really upsets me.

From BBC:

The ship set off from Baltimore's Seagirt Marine Terminal at around 00:24 local time on Tuesday, en route for Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Its speed steadily increased and it maintained a straight route south east along the Patapsco River.

Then at 01:25 MarineTraffic data shows that the ship suddenly diverted from its straight course and began to slow down.

Around this time, video shows that all lights on the exterior of the ship suddenly turned off and smoke began emanating from the ship's funnel.

Shortly afterwards it hit the bridge.

Synergy said the crew, who are all Indian nationals, and the two pilots on board had all been accounted for and there were no reports of any injuries.

The company said there were several possible explanations for the incident but that, with two pilots present, such a crash was unusual.

A shipping expert told the BBC that the crash could have been caused by engine failure, steering failure or generator blackout.

That thing sends a chill down my spine. As a really odd and specific phobia I have - "big things + water" is a major (irrational??) fear. Whales for example, DISGUSTING. So this thing... it's so massive. The weight & momentum it would have is just unfathomable and it's not actually surprising that it could completely demolish a bridge.

Local family woke me up to tell me this news worried our in-laws may have been commuting. They're further north than this so don't think they would even take this path, but still depressing to have heard about this this morning.

They're ok though are they Maru? You've heard from them since?

Or is he suggesting that it’s the same people who supposedly planted all the bombs in the twin towers LOL

What a miracle, the bridge was closed to traffic a few hours earliler, sadly no miracle for some of the workers on the bridge but the fatalities could have been so much higher

Baltimore Key Bridge collapse live updates: At least 6 people missing as officials say ship made 'Mayday' call before crash

At least six people remain unaccounted for after a large cargo ship crashed into a pillar of Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge on Tuesday morning, causing it to collapse.

A total of eight workers who were fixing potholes on the bridge fell into the Patapsco River below. Two people have since been rescued, officials said.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore declared a state of emergency and said the crash appears to be an accident, noting there was "no credible evidence of a terrorist attack."

President Biden said he will travel to Baltimore "as quickly as I can." He said the federal government will pay to rebuild the bridge, and added that the Port of Baltimore — which halted vessel traffic amid the collapse — supports 15,000 jobs.

The 1.6-mile bridge, named after the poet who wrote “The Star-Spangled Banner," spans a major thoroughfare of East Coast shipping. It's also the entryway to the port, which is the largest port in the U.S. for specialized cargo like trucks, tractors and trailers.

I didn’t hear from my aunt for a few hours, even after calling her so I was panicking a lot. But luckily on my lunch break she called me back and she’s okay.

I have other family there too that I’m just not as close too and they actually had friends driving to the airport like pretty much at that exact time and they missed it by minutes

Crazy isn’t it?

…that really must cause them to feel quite a chill, that they missed it by minutes…that thought might be something they have a lot for a while as well…I’m so happy that your aunt is ok, that all of your family and friends are ok…such an anxious day for you……
