Part of the blame for that has to go to the EU. Don't you remember their appalling behaviour toward Theresa May? They were like a bunch of schoolboys. I was no fan of May but I felt for her during that last trip to Brussels, where no one would talk to her, no one would look at her, even.

Kier Starmer was always going to do this. The fishermen are hopping mad, watching their livelihoods being handed over to foreign fishermen. This is just dragging us back into the EU by stealth. This is the first step. People will not forget this and they will not forget Kier.

This shows that a democratic vote means nothing - nothing - to Labour.

I have to disagree.
This may had he gone further done Starmer some good.

Plus not ALL in the fishing industry are hopping mad at all.
While most admittedly are not happy with the 12 year scenario, for some on certain elements of the fishing industry, there's greater opportunities again as to trading with the EU.
Which they welcome.

Of course it's not taking the UK back into the EU, (in my view unfortunately).
That's just Reform moaning like what Farage was blowing out in the original EU referendum.

Actually I never thought we should leave anyhow, I would definitely vote to go back in given the chance and I also think the majority now would do so too.
We can't know that for certain but I'd be far less worried about a new vote now than I was in 2016 on the issue.
That comes from just talking to people who voted leave and however now would vote to go back OR not vote at all.
Most of younger people who can now vote that I know of and in my own family too, also think we should be much closer to the EU.
Far moreso than towards the USA at present too.

As for Theresa May, she was sidelined ignorantly from the EU representatives which was not at all nice to watch I agree.
That however fades rather in comparison with the crushingly, humiliatingly hard time HER own Party gave her publicly in parliament over her Brexit proposals
With Johnson the ringleader working hard against her on the backbenches, just to further HIS own career.
(Plus the venom from Farage and his UKIP Mk1 to the current MK3 Party against the EU officials and even from some in the Conservative Party, who also were equally ignorant).

Had the Conservative government negotiated a much better deal all round in the first place, then little to no further alterations may not have been necessary.

I'm actually personally disappointed in that Starmer and Labour haven't gone further in this deal.
I'm more with the LibDems and Greens on this that we SHOULD move much closer to the EU and go even as far as rejoining too.

Totally disagree with the vast majority of that Joey. But naturally respect your point of view.

the reality is that it will always be around 50/50 on peoples views with anything relating to the EU. My own feeling is that people have enough things to worry about in their lives in these times and very specific details that are agreed with the EU are now way down the priority list unless it relates to immigration

MTVN 19-05-2025 06:39 PM

Honestly the Tories and Reform risk making themselves look quite ridiculous with their sensationalist rhetoric every time the EU comes up. Everything has to be a 'surrender' or a 'betrayal' when all we're doing is working with our largest trading partner to make things easier for businesses. Most people are sick of it - the referendum was nine years ago. Let's move on

Indeed. Added to that, I would say a large portion of people who once supported it realise Brexit was a mistake. It would be ridiculous not to try and mend much of the damage it's done purely because people were misled to voting for it years and years ago.

We should absolutely call for another vote. We do it with the Prime Minister every four years without that being called a 'risk to democracy'. What's the difference?

Livia 20-05-2025 09:22 AM

All the opponents of Brexit clapping their hands and accusing supporters of Brexit of being untruthful and overreacting. Who thinks it's right to allow the French to plunder our fishing waters while we're paying them to stand scratching their balls as illegals launch their inflatables from French beaches.

I think Labour may have a death wish. Every move they make plays right into the hands of Farage.

If being the operative word.

MTVN 20-05-2025 12:17 PM

It's very unlikely to tbh because food prices are driven by a load of factors. At best it will ease inflationary pressure but that would only mean prices rise slower not actually go down

joeysteele 20-05-2025 02:42 PM

I just have the inkling over time this will possibly sideline Farage and Reform.
Sadly too Badenoch with her more still running up Farage's and Reform's backside

I think, I don't know obviously, however from my talking to those who even voted leave, that some of them want a change of direction.
This could well be a wiser plan and move from the government.
I myself make no secret that I think he should go much further.
I said earlier I'm more with the LibDems and Greens on this, including even the SNP too.

Perhaps, hopefully for me, it will gradually come that Farage is seen for the more bigoted division creating only individual that he is.
His Party hopefully seen the same way too.

There hasn't been much to applaud so far in the last 10 months but the India deal and now this change in tone to the EU by this government, that I do applaud and I do think this could do Starmer and the government good, and expose the more prejudice only of Farage, Reform and also unfortunately the Conservatives under Badenoch's terrible leadership.

I'm still not sure on the USA deal or whatever that is.
It can never be sure that Trump will stick to his word on very much.
So that deal? while I welcome it, may not be a lasting one unless all in the UK keep running up Trump's backside too.
