I suggest 200-250 KB as the limit for now.
Darn dial-up :bawling:

Other than banners another thing I have noticed recently is the megabytes of avatars I have had to download that I don't really care about.

On one thread I found myself downloading 3 avatars which totaled about 6MB of useless junk. Animated avatars in the region of 50KB to 100KB and can look good, but there is no need for them to be massive.

Yeah, hopefully one day dial up will be phased out and everyone will have to have broadband. It's cheap enough now so I don't know why people are still using dial up.

It's not just dial-up. I have broadband and I find it highly annoying. It stops me downloading stuff while I'm on the site and if anyone else is using the internet in the house then the pages never fully load until after I have finished reading the page.

Maybe the forum should introduce a new 'hide avatar' feature.

James 13-10-2007 06:58 PM

They slow down even on broadband if you open a lot of browser tabs.

If we are talking about avatars yours is 2.4 MB, while CathalOS's is 1.4 MB and Matthew's is a massive 7.8 MB.

So for just this page in this thread that is 11.8 MB of animated GIF's.

Depends on lots of factors but it would be under James suggested guidelines.

Do you want me to remove my animated avatar then Red?

I like it but it's a size issue.

I would like to see a cut down version of it or a slide show version. The problem with GIF's is the rubbish compression the format provides. If you have lots of frames they just get to big.

Is my Avatar and Siggy okay, my Avvie looks small but i'm not sure about the size?

Yours is a more respectable 871.9 KB, but still over James size guidelines.

Well do you want me to change it to just a picture or something?

JPEG which is a which contains a compression algorithm so you can balance picture quality against size. Unfortunately it is just a picture format and doesn't support animation which is provided by it's sister format known as MPEG 1.

On the subject of banners, I have a question:

I am currently using a PHP script (hosted on my own webspace) as an image in my sig which shows two different banners at random. I am doing this in order to save sig space whilst still having multiple banners.

Is this OK?

It just needs cutting down. There is no reason why you can't have a animated avatar as long as it doesn't contain too many frames.

My guess is that everyone is using some kind of software to convert small film clips to animated GIF's and they are unaware of the size they are.I don't think anyone is doing it on purpose it is just happening.

Thanks Red

FYI, the two banners I am using are no more than 17.5kb (each).
