I am severely dyslexic but I use a computer which spells as I type.....without it you wouldnt be able to tell what I have written

If I had joined now instead of when I did..... and was treated the way some people are..... I wouldnt stick around that long

Maybe get a little more tolerance? I've spent years in school trying to improve on spelling and not using "their" for "there" etc, it doesn't come as easy to some as it does others and people shouldn't be jumped on for that because it really does get to you and it is SO irritating when I see people climb on that high horse and point out MINOR spelling errors towards new members because they feel they can.

It's understandable that text speech gets annoying if it's every other word but sometimes I feel that "older" members like to jump on new members over pety text speech, perhaps they feel they have a right? I was reading some of my posts from when I first joined this forum and I spoke like a complete moron, used a lot of text speech and not once did I have somebody make a snide comment, talk down to me because of it or treat me different because I was a new member. After a month or so I grew out of it and got a U2U from one of the mods reminding me about it politely.

After all, it's the mods job to do that, not ours. And as somebody said up there ^^, the majority of the time, I feel that people "call new members out" on spelling mistakes/text speech/replacing an "s" with a "z" for an arguement, to make themselves feel superior on the forum because if I saw a post with "housematez" in it, I wouldn't care less, it's not preventing me from reading the post or understanding it and I wouldn't think twice about climbing on that high horse, but some can't help themselves and it's off putting to new members. I'm glad I joined 2 and a half years ago because if I'd have joined around now and got the response new members get from "oldies" then I wouldn't stick around.
That's fair enough, because I can't recall having a go at you for spelling something incorrectly. But members who post with text-speech habits (such as "u" instead of "you" and other such things) irritate me the most, and they don't seem to acknowledge they're doing it. I appreciate that not everybody can be perfect all the time, but there's a difference between making a mistake every now and then, and continually making the same errors.
No, you never have. But it sounded like you meant that basic spelling and grammar mistakes annoy you and when some people can't help it, having somebody pull you up on it doesn't help matters.

Exactly, it's pety little stuff that people jump on and they do it with the intention of causing an arguement IMO. I think people do it because they feel that as they have "friends" on here then they've got people to back them up and that thread then turns into 5 older members ganging up on a new member and the forum then turns into a playground and it's not nice to read.

Well said.

I never correct spelling errors, or really enforce them. I do however try and stop people who constantly use text speech. If someone is dyslexic or maybe even accidentally mistypes 'there' as 'their' then this isn't a problem. It's when people start 'tlkin lk dat, it bcoms anoyin'

You are right in that groups form in forums. With as many members as we have this is always to be expected and unfortunately it's impossible to make sure that everyone is happy all the time. We have a great moderating team here at TiBB that always try and sort out any problems you have. Every reported post gets dealt with, and I feel the admins/mods do a great job here.

I get a lot of emails from people who have emailed to tell me they are no longer going to be posting on TiBB because of the 'groups'. In one case not so long ago I searched for all posts made by this member and found them :

a) to be extremely controversial against a housemate, and many members disagreed. This is a forum - not everyone is going to have the same opinions on a discussion, and many people feel if the majority aren't in agreement with them then they are ganging up against them. This is rarely the case, and it just looks like bullying because of housemate loyalty.

b) use of excessive text speech - which members agree not to use when registered on this site.

c) use of 1 word replies to topics. Sometimes someone maybe creates a discussion topic related to Big Brother, and may spend some time gathering their thoughts on this subject only to get a reply saying "yeah".

So anyway, at some point in time everyone was new to this forum and may have felt like they were being excluded. If someone is making your experience on this forum unpleasant, then let us know. All reported posts are made in confidentiality, and will be dealt with when an admin/mod gets online. As far as people complaining about spelling, as I mentioned before... please ignore people who are picking out minor errors due to mistypes or dyslexia -- however if it is txt speech that is being picked out, we ask that you try and refrain from using it, as it makes it much easier for people to browse the forum.

If you have any other problems or questions, you can U2U me at any time.

Thanks.. and happy posting!

- Mark

Yeah I know what you mean if its a whole post with errors everywhere, it can get annoying. But I mean when someone makes a small typo and get murdered for it.
Of course but at least the sentence should be understandable. If there is only one mistake in it then where's the problem ?

I'm not taking defence on anyone because both have their responsabily and it's a hard thing to judge as not every new members speak with a text speech and not every "old" member is a bully, you get me ?

I do remember many debates about it in the past, some accusations were ridiculous from the new members but I have to say, this time it's so not. So I guess we should make a big effort, everyone.

Noel 14-01-2008 07:49 PM

Yeah, I know. Like there are a lot of old members who are lovely and are nice to everyone, and there is only a small minority of members who occasionally use their registered date as an authority, which isn't fair. We are all members at the end of the day.

uhmuhm
all i can really think of to say is that
i tend to have very contrasting opinions to most people here
&liking/disliking housemates that everyone else don't seem to.
but i still kinda fit in x]

not that i want to.
as long as i'm accepted as part of the community.
i don't really care.

i don't see bullying here.
mainly newer members doing things to annoy the olders.
hence why the groups form :]

Magic 20-01-2008 07:41 PM

Who was Oxymoron in the end?

Stu 21-01-2008 05:45 PM

I give to you exhibit A - Oxymoron. Proof of the point im about to make.

We dont hate some of the newer members because of spelling. Or age. Or post count. Or spelling. Or hair lenght. Or eye colour. Or their immunity to nosebleeds. Or their taste in ice creams. Or any other resons certain members suggest.

We hate certain new members because they are...well...twats.

Billy 21-01-2008 05:53 PM

I want to know who Oxymoron was.

In that case who was he imposing? :puzzled: Was he secretly posing as an extremely silly person this whole time and he , in actual fact , has MENSA quality brains?

Because that would be just hillarious. And incredibly unlikely. I love a good twist!
