The actor Heath Ledger was found dead this afternoon in an apartment building at 421 Broome Street in SoHo, according to the New York City police. Mr. Ledger was 28.

At 3:31 p.m., a masseuse arrived at Apartment 5A in the building for an appointment with Mr. Ledger, the police said. The masseuse was let in to the home by a housekeeper, who then knocked on the door of Mr. Ledger’s bedroom. When no one answered, the housekeeper and the masseuse opened the bedroom and found Mr. Ledger unconscious. They shook him, but he did not respond. They immediately called the authorities. The police said they did not suspect foul play. Officials said pills fear found near the body.

High amounts of heroin were found in his bloodstream.

Where did you get that report from? No reputable news stories are saying anything about heroin. He was apparently suffering from pneumonia, and a bottle of prescription pills were found near him. The autopsy is being done today, so there is no way that anyone can know what was in his bloodstream yet.

I hate these trashy reports that just make stuff up.

His parents only found out via the news.

Oh how sad, what a real tragedy, 28 years old and his whole life in front of him.

I hate it when reporters sensationalise things, I have not read about heroin either, just prescription medication close by.

:( he was amazing, I really loved his films and he was so talented.
Can't believe it, saw it on GMTV this morning and I was just so shocked.

I do believe the story Ross posted was one of the breaking news reports on Sky News, a few hours after his death so it won't be on the Sky News site anymore.

Call me heartless but I really couldn't care less. People die every day and some are much younger than 28. No, they aren't well known but noone is ever shocked about those so I fail to be shocked about some actor.

Nevertheless, R.I.P Heath.

omg this is so terrible.

This is what my mates have gone on about all day really, I think its sad a man so young has died, My friend said the apartment he died in was Mary Kate Olsens, i don't think thats true though.

R.I.P Heath.

Well the knowledge a one year old girl won't grow up with her doting father makes me sad regardless of whether he's famous, not famous, suicide, murder or drugs OD etc.

 His death isn't less meaningless just because he's famous and other people aren't. If I heard the same about someone who wasn't famous I'd be sad.

xDramatick 23-01-2008 03:21 PM

He was an incredible actor.
I actually shed a few tears =[

I really can't believe it this is such a shock. I remember him in films like 10 things I hate about you one of my favourtie films actually with him in it. It really is a shame. I heard on the radio that his family said he wouldn't comit suicide but then again he might have been suffering from depression and no-body knew! It's a shame he was a very talented actor.
R.I.P Heath x

Stu 23-01-2008 03:54 PM

One of the few great actors of his generation. Rest in peace.

I'm still in utter shock and disbelief! He was an amazing actor and such a gorgeous guy!
It still doesn't seem real, 'Heath Ledger Found Dead' to me doesn't seem a real sentence, its like someone has made a mistake!
Its so heartbreaking, i felt like crying when i found out!
His poor daughter!

SairBabi92 24-01-2008 08:06 PM

I just foun this!

Shekhar Kapur, the film director, said Ledger had made him "promise" the previous evening to call him in the morning so they could meet.

Watch: Fans and Hollywood stars pay their respects

But by the time Kapur made the call, the 28-year-old actor's body had been found in his loft apartment in Manhattan.

"I last spoke to him the night before he died," said Kapur, who directed the Australian actor in The Four Feathers.

"I had just arrived in New York [from London]. He said he could not see me that night but really wanted to meet me the next day.

"He made me promise that I would call him in the morning and wake him up. I tried. Little did I know that his soul had already left his body."
