British Gt Championship: Rockingham Preview

May 21, 2008

Rockingham International Super Sports Car Circuit hosts the fifth and sixth rounds of the 2008 Avon Tyres British GT Championship this weekend where round three race winner Jeremy Metcalfe is aiming to make a return to the headline GT3 Class podium.

After a lengthy six week break in the calendar, the category roars back into action at the 1.95-mile Northamptonshire venue this coming Sunday, 25th May, and Spring Bank Holiday Monday, 26th May, and the 20-year-old from Fleet in Hampshire is bidding to enjoy his most consistent and successful weekend of his debut season in sportscars.

The championship table is incredibly close at the moment and a couple of podium results really could make the difference for Jeremy and team-mate Luke Hines who are just 13 points away from the top of the GT3 Class driver standings. However, Sunday morning’s practice will mark Jeremy’s first ever mileage in a GT car at Rockingham.

“I really can’t wait to get back in the car this weekend”, said Jeremy, “It’s been a long time since the last outing so I’m itching to get back to competitive action and for Luke and I to try and continue the great form we had at Knockhill. Winning our first race was a fantastic feeling but now I want more.

“There’s no doubt the competition will be strong at Rockingham, especially the Dodge Vipers which will be very fast around the Oval section of the track, but I’m confident the team will give us a great car and we’ll be in with a chance of some good results. ”

Showing excellent pace during the season opening event at Oulton Park in Cheshire, Jeremy’s weekend was affected by a set of unfortunate circumstances but the next race meeting at Knockhill in Scotland offered a turn around in fortunes.

Qualifying on pole position for round three, the British Racing Drivers’ Club (BRDC) Rising Star raced brilliantly and coped well with a series of Safety Car periods to hand over his CR Scuderia Ferrari 430 GT3 in the lead of the race. Team-mate Hines went on to take the chequered flag at the end of his stint for the duo’s maiden victory.

Becoming a British GT race winner in only his second competitive outing – remember, Jeremy was unable to take part in round two after Hines was forced to retire during the opening stint – the Hampshire racer has already underlined his pace and status as a genuine category front-runner and he is aiming for more glory this weekend.

Rounds five and six of the 2008 Avon Tyres British GT Championship will take place at Rockingham in Northamptonshire this weekend. On Sunday, 25th May, there will be a practice session from 10.00 with qualifying beginning at 13.25 and round five getting underway at around 15.25.

On Spring Bank Holiday Monday, 26th May, there will be a short warm-up session from 10.00 followed by the sixth round of the season at approximately 13.25.
