im not saying remove the law to encourage sexaul behaviour more im just saying that the law is not being obeyed by a high proportion of teenagers so why have it if it has no effect on what teeagers do

i dont really consider an age to be acceptable, i think its whenever you are ready some people feel ready at 14 some others feel ready at 16. As long as both people involved feel happy with what they are doing an are using contraception then i personally dont think there is any reason why they should not
The current age is 16 and young people are having sex. If you lower it,will people be having sex at an even younger age and learning about it at an even younger age?

Isn't there enough pressure to grow up as there is ?

But with any lage there would have to be loop holes with that law. Because like Shaun said earlier, if some one who's 16 has sex with a 15 year old are they really breaking the law. Look at the situation with Jamie Lynn Spears' boyfriend (I know they're not exactly a poster child for teen sex!). He almost faced rape charges because in that state's law she was too young but he wasn't but there was only a year in the difference!

But in most situations it really depends on the people involved.
well yes exactly my girlfriend was 16 the first time we done it and i was 15 so technically she was breaking the law by having sex with me but the law needs to oversee things like that considering we are in a long term relationship

It need to be there for all the others that it does stop. Lets not forget the risk of pregnancy. Lowering or abolishing it would raise the amount of teen pregnancy which doesn't need to be any higher than it already is.

I agree, and what can we expect then,?
I can see one benefit though kids not having time off school to look after kids, at this rate they will be in the same school only different year grades.

This world has officially gone mad...

well yeh i agree with that as my 11 year old sister had a sex education lesson last week and they gave them all condoms which i think is one of the main reasons why people are having sex at such a young age, i think that the educating of sex should be held back until they are at least 14 or 15

But if the law was to overlook any example of law break then think of the criticism it would recieve for not overlooking everything. It's the age old case of people accusing the law of having deifferent rules for different people.

Wow! I had sex ed when I was 11 too but it was extremly vague. They actually said "When two people love each other they have urges to roll around and hug and kiss each other which sometimes leads to other things"! That could possibly be down too it being a catholic schoo, I was attending at the time and it was a cartoon they used to show us! But it didn't include talk of condoms, protection or anything like that.

but to be honest having under age sex is not the worst crime in, unless you physically hold someone down and have sex with them against their will then its not really a big deal

Well you and I both know that but as I said before a crime is a crime and the law can't say its OK to break the law this way but not this way. That would be hypocritical of them.

i really hope so, i left school last year and so my sex ed lesson was 6 years ago and it went no where near as graphical as that. I think the most we did was had to draw a diagram of a Vagina and Penis and learn about the organs!

Princess 22-06-2008 12:54 AM

It's 17 in Ireland which I think is better than 16. Having a limit is never going to stop people have underage sex. But it should be there. Young people need a bit of guideage about when you should be mature enough to do certain things like have sex. And it prevents old perverts getting away with sleeping with innocent young girls. I'm probably making no sense...

dennissabre 22-06-2008 12:57 AM

When i first saw this thread i thought you were just trying to be provocative and to be quite honest i felt  as i work with people who have been victims of abuse.

This is why i wanted to know what you would consider the acceptable age of consent?

Now thanks to the Adult replies you have received tonight i just want to say this thread has actually turned out to be very interesting,so:cheer:'s

Oh, no your not, makes very good sense to me, don't forget this wasn't about lowering the age this was to abolish the age completely... thats where sense departed.

Oh thanks! Well then basically my post makes sense if those reasons were for not abolishing it...

Could not agree more, I think the problem was the title.
But the thread was well thought/argued and sensitively put from origin, that deserves credit.....:cheer:

Rob 22-06-2008 01:02 AM

yes this thread has definately opened my mind to views about the topic i never thought of before, its clear that abolishing the age limit is a clear no go and that making it higher or lower will simply will not work, but whatever we do youngsters will continue to haver sex, but one thing we can all agree on im sure is that its there to protect young girls from falling in to traps of 40 year old perverts, am i right?

Yes, I should have made that more clear to you sorry.
You made perfect sense in not wishing to abolish an age limit.

dennissabre 22-06-2008 01:08 AM

I'm 43 and i'm far from being a pervert!
Are you trying to undo all your good work after all i've just said about you?

AngRemembered 22-06-2008 01:09 AM

, am i right? [/quote]

Spot on honey, and at least you have the maturity here to have made plans for your future, I only hope that care and good intentions are well rewarded and happy for you.
Even if they do go wrong at least you have sincerely thought about the prospects of the future.
I wish you and your partner a happy life together.
