Viewers on E4+1 are supposed to believe it was technical difficulties when they were cutting the comment out and making the picture all fuzzy like on analogue TV

I would've done if it weren't for this thread.

Rubbish
Wendy was Just speaking her Mind.

Stop being so PC.

brandstifter 02-09-2008 06:32 PM

Sorry, but "Stop being PC" and "Everything's racist nowadays" simply don't cut it in the justification stakes. And the number of people misquoting her here doesn't help. She was bang out of order and I would put money on them not having her back!

Oh come on thats not racist! I've always said Chinese, Japanese and Thai look the same in my opinion and I dont mean it in a racist way. But they do look the same.

I think some people need to get over themselves

excuse me but how do chineese and japanese people look the same?

there is a huge difference between the 2. the fact you are not aware of the soooooo obvious difference between them is probbbbbbbbbably because you are not very cultured ....

i beg u just google it now and see if you can see a noticable difference.. i'll give u a clue.... the eyes....

why dont u take some time away from the computer and pick up a book.. or something productive...

Of course she will be back. When she is guesting they get higher viewing figures. As for this racist nonsense, utter bollocks:xyxwave:

MargeryFan 02-09-2008 07:14 PM

I wouldn't have said it was racist. just ignorant. If she was racist she wouldn't have supported kat in the first place (which she had been doing apparently on previous weeks).

bananarama 02-09-2008 07:16 PM

I don't like Wendy Richards but she has a right to express herself like anyone else......To accuse her of racism is utter rubbish.....

Let's stop this garbage of having to tread on bloody egg shells....

We already know that Kathreya is Thai though, so there's no need for confusion or sweeping generalisation.

Indeed we do. I just think it's a bit unkind to call someone incredibly stupid because they are poor at facial recognition......Indeed it may just have been a joke by the OP.........

stonedape 02-09-2008 07:44 PM

Everyone's a little bit racist, sometimes...

Look, there's the role Kat's been training for on the end!

Wow! What compelling, well researched arguments from people who clearly know what they’re talking about. Well, I'm convinced!

What she actually said:

“Oh Chinese, Japanese, Thai - they’re all the same to me.” [and a further three sentences along the same lines]

“Racism (n): a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities…” Webster’s Dictionary

I rest my case.

zeebo323 02-09-2008 08:59 PM

Give me a break, all she was saying is that she doesn't differentiate between the different oriental races.

To be honest I don't either, whenever I see someone I just call them Asian cause how the hell can I tell what exactly they are without them telling me first?

Poppy-a 03-09-2008 10:52 AM

The fuss that has been made over Wendy Richard's comments are totally and utterly pathetic. It's this ludicrous level of political correctness that has made this country the over-sensitive, whiney, pathetic place to live that it is. You can't say ANYthing without being accused of being 'racist' or 'sexist' and heaven knows what else.

Men are afraid to compliment a woman in case he is hoiked over the coals and fired for 'sexual harrassment,' and you can't fly your 'Merry Christmas' banners in some towns for fear of offending 'ethnic minorites.' My town luckily isn't so ridiculous and doesn't ban Christmas; but if it did I would celebrate it anyway!!! What I say is if you don't like my England flag or Merry Christmas sign; LOOK THE OTHER WAY. I would NEVER tell someone of another race or religion to take their country's flag down; Especially if they were IN THEIR OWN COUNTRY

And now we have a elderly lady making an innocent comment that she can't differentiate between Chinese and Thai, and she gets accused of being RACIST. STUPID STUPID STUPID! THAT's what it is; I know MANY people - myself included, who struggle to tell Chinese and Thai and Malaysian and suchlike apart. They DO look similar; it's not a racist remark, and I am not STUPID; this is a FACT. Just like some African races look similar. If I see a black person, I don't know if their ethnic origin originates from from Ghana or South Africa or Sierra Leonne or whatever. Similarly with Scandinavia; I can't tell a Dane from a Norwegian.

And when I was in Spain last year, me and my husband and daughter were mistaken for SWEDISH, because we are all fair skinned and blue-eyed... Were we offended and huffy and ranting about how utterly mortified we were, and calling the race relations board? NO, because we're not pathetic whiney whingers who have NOTHING ELSE TO MOAN ABOUT.

Political correctness has gone TOO FAR. Whilst there NEEDED to be something in place to protect ethnic minorities from abuse in this country; like sexual equality, political correctness has gone too far, and it is now just coming across and ridiculous, silly, and laughable, and actually extremely annoying.

bananarama 03-09-2008 03:07 PM

It seems as though some have brought Ofcom into it now......reportedly investigating...

If she were implying she was better than another race because of them all being the same, then I could see it as a racist comment, but the way you've described it, it's not racist at all. People are way too sensitive anymore. We're becoming a planet of wimps.

If someone mistook me for an American I would not be offended and I wouldn't find it racist! Same if someone mistook me for a german... or a russian. It doesn't really bother me, I don't know why everyone is kicking up a fuss about thai and chinese people... they look the same like we look like Americans...

Its only Racist if the person it applies to is offended... Kat wasn't even there! So for people to call it racist is completely stupid! People really really need to get over themselves... I have said worse things than that... does it make me racist? Even if I am joking with the person it is about?

Roberus 03-09-2008 04:10 PM

I was just gagging for Kat to come out of the house and start speaking in a broad Brummie, Geordie, Mancunian, Devonian etc etc accent. Now that would have been hirarious!!

Didn't catch Wendy Richards comment but hardly sounds on the same scale as the Goody bint does it?

Unfortunately racism, or accusations of racism, only seem to occur when the person has a different skin colour to white. Like has already been said I'm sure we've all stood a chance of being thought of as Dutch, German, Welsh, Scandinavian, French blah blah blah but that's not made a big deal of because we're white.

The world's gone mad I tell ya and a lot of it is fuelled by the media. I have freinds who are Sikh and they can't see what a lot of the fuss is about in a lot of circumstances and haven't taken offence at items when those "do gooders" around try & convince them to complain.

I heard of someone (white person) making a complaint of racism against someone only to be told it was rascist of them to make the complaint against the person in the first place!

As I said.......the world's gone mad!

Thanks :) :) :)

And thanks to everyone else for their responses too :) Thought people may have been mad about my shouty ranting post, but I was just fuming at all the fuss being made about something so trivial.
