Yeah, she's got a decent voice, but that's it.
She's not the only person in the world that can sing like that. Go on youtube and there's loads that do the octave range/ad lib thing. It's annoying, and she's not unique at all.

I really don't get you sometimes. You say there's no talent in the charts at all, yet Leona has one of the best voices around, writes songs, plays instruments etc and yet you dismiss her? I'm not just bigging up Leona, there's plenty of other talented people - most of which are also in your "bad music" banner. And it was the same last week during the XF. Some girl wowed everyone and you said you didn't like her because she was "boring". What do they have to do to be deemed talented for you? It doesn't make any sense for me.
I guess it's down to opinion, but to say there's no talent in the charts when there quite clearly is - it just baffles me.

Allow me to explain.
I've never said there's
no talent in the charts, I just think the more talented/better music gets overlooked because it's not 'radio friendly'. So you get all these singers releasing music that's pleasing to the public/radio, and the same bland rubbish that you'll hear someone else sing a few months later. Leona, IMO, is one of these singers. I'm not saying Leona isn't talented, I just think there's MORE talent. Have we seen proof of her playing instruments? How come she doesn't always play them? As for songwriting, she wrote about 3 songs on her debut. It's very rare that I respect an artist that doesn't contribute to the writing of an album, because I believe that's what brings out the talent
Write your own songs, your experiences, your thoughts, your ideas; and IMO, it makes you want to work with it more. It's something you've produced, so then you'll work on the vocal melody, have ideas about the instrumentation, and go from there. That's how most of my fave artists/bands work. I'm obviously not the only person who thinks this, last night I was talking to a mate of my bf's who was saying that bands such as Oasis and U2 walk all over Leona Lewis and Rihanna in the talent stakes.
I personally find Leona's music boring and dreary. It all sounds samey to me. Better In Time and Forgive Me are both uptempo songs with a drum machine beat. All her ballads; 'hmm, really slow, with a piano, throw in a few ad libs, cliche lyrics, ta-dah everyone will love it'. It's radio pleasing but otherwise, nothing amazing. As Scampi said, there's other types of talent. Eric Prydz is an amazing producer, as is Mark Ronson. Just because I find someone boring, I'm not necessarily denying them of their talent [as I said with Leona, she is talented, but I don't believe she's as talented as she's made out to be]. I can't even remember who the girl was, she didn't stand out to me. I like
unique music. Someone who stands out, is individual. Katy Perry, Sam Sparro, Patrick Wolf, Evanescence, Porcelain And The Tramps. All of these are unique. It's hard to compare them to anyone else. Now let's compare Leona. Christina Aguilera, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey etc. She doesn't stand out for me. The only reality show winners I like to listen to are Shayne Ward [who's music, I'll admit, isn't great], Leon Jackson [can't say yet], Kelly Clarkson [The most talented reality show winner IMO], and Will Young [Good voice, Great music], but as I've stated in the parenthesis, the only two who really stand out for me are Kelly and Will. They're unique, they've developed their own style/music.
Now, my bad music banner. Again, I haven't said any of them are talentless? I've called leona boring because I DO find her boring. Rihanna is extremely overrated. Her voice is nothing special at all, she's just been lucky to have good songs. If it wasn't for Umbrella, or SOS, she'd probably have been dropped by her company. Chris Brown, I'll admit, is a decent songwriter but his voice drives me crazy. Kanye West has one of the most unbearable attitudes in the music industry, and although his music isn't awful, I only find the tracks with samples that stand out [i.e. Diamonds From Sierra Leone, Stronger etc]. Madonna's past her sell-by date. 4 Minutes was awful, and although Give It 2 Me was pretty good, I don't wanna think about a 50 something woman singing 'Give It 2 Me, yeah' and 'if you can handle it, undress me'. She was good in her day, but it's like most older people [Cliff Richard, Duran Duran], They lose it. &I'm a fan of Duran Duran, but their older stuff is much better. Now My Chemical Romance I was a HUGE fan of. Until they became Mainstream and did all this 'gimmick' rubbish. Welcome To The Black Parade was, again, mainstream pleasing. Do you ever hear any of their older music played? Nope. You just get annoying teenagers who run around going 'OMG MCR IS SO COOL' because they liked Teenagers, or Welcome to The Black Parade. They don't stand out anymore because everyone tries to copy them.
