CORRIE legend Jack Duckworth is moving out of Weatherfield - but bosses have reassured fans he will not be leaving the show.

Actor Bill Tarmey, 68 - who has played Jack for 30 years - is cutting back on acting after health problems.

Viewers will see pigeon-fancier Jack move out of the house he shared with late wife Vera (Liz Dawn) - and into the plush digs of millionaire new love Connie Rathbone (Rita May) in the fictional suburb of Middleton.

Bill made the decision to cut back on his role after talks with Coronation Street supremo Kim Crowther.

But the star will remain in the ITV1 soap, popping back to film scenes in the Rovers Return and Roy's Rolls.

He suffered a major heart attack in 1976 and had bypass surgery in 1986.

After a second heart attack in 2002 he had a pacemaker fitted - and still smokes despite doctors' advice.

Bill also recently admitted his hearing difficulties cause problems during filming.

He said: "Deafness creeps up on you. It's starting to get a bit embarrassing on set."

The star's poignant leaving scenes mark the end of the Duckworth dynasty in Weatherfield - and are bound to pull in a huge audience.

Viewers will see Jack depart the cobbles with Vera's ashes tucked under his arm.

Following his wife's death from a sudden heart attack last year, Jack sold the house to his lodger Tyrone Dobbs but continued to live there.

Even after Tyrone married sweetheart Molly (Vicky Binns) earlier this year, the newlyweds assured him that the place would always be Jack's home.

While he clears the house of his possessions, Jack takes a trip down memory lane as he leafs through photograph albums of Vera, their wayward son Terry and their grandchildren.
Moving

In a moving tribute to Vera, Jack says to himself: "Well Vee, I suppose this is it.

"Everybody knows we had more than our share of ups and downs between these walls. But we were happy here until you decided to sneak off to heaven before closing time. It's not like Connie will ever replace you.

"You know that don't you, my little puddle-duck? Aye, I'm sure you do."

Jack then places the urn containing Vera's ashes under one arm and his stuffed pigeon Fergie under the other - and takes a last, emotional look at his old home.

He then bids a tearful farewell to Tyrone, telling him: "Twenty-one years of married life me and our Vera spent here.

"They were happy days most of them. Not all of them but most. But I know I'm leaving the house in good hands."

As they hug, a sobbing Tyrone says: "Bye, Jack. I'll miss you."

In his final words, Jack replies: "Aye, lad - me and all. Take care. Bye for now."

But Corrie bosses have stressed they are planning for the character to keep making one-off appearances in the future.

During his farewell pint of Newton and Ridleys in the Rovers, Jack tells old friend Rita Sullivan (Barbara Knox): "I'll try to pop back now and again.

"Because as long as this place still sells beer... I'll still be wanting to drink it."

CORONATION Street's Rita Sullivan is to quit running the Kabin - after 36 years behind the counter.

The pensioner, played by Barbara Knox, will announce her retirement at Ramsey Clegg's wake in the Rovers Return.

Rita came into Corrie in 1964 and started managing the newsagents in 1973 for Len Fairclough (Peter Adamson), who she married four years later. An insider said: "It's a massive change for the face of Coronation Street. Rita has been selling cigarettes, organising papers and gossiping with customers for decades.

"She is one of the soap's biggest characters."

Business partner Norris Cole (Malcolm Hebden) and Emily Bishop (Eileen Derbyshire) are first to know, with Rita breaking the news as she thinks about Ramsey (Andrew Sachs).

She tells them: "His death made me think about why I'm working at the shop when I don't need to. I'm fed up of working, I'm going to retire. I know I've said it before but this time I mean it and I won't be changing my mind."

Norris is sure to try to persuade her to sell her share of the business to him.

Yesterday TV Biz revealed that Jack Duckworth, played by Bill Tarmey, 68, is moving out of his home on Coronation Street after 25 years. This allows bosses to explain his breaks from the ITV1 soap.

Rita's onscreen retirement will also leave the door open for fresh faces.

And Tina McIntyre (Michelle Keegan), at the shop for six months, will get an increased role. A source said: "The character of Tina works well, and bosses are keen to make her a central player."

The Kabin has always been one of the hubs on the Street. It was there Alf Roberts used to lust after Rita in the 1980s - and it was where foster daughter Sharon Gaskell had a surprise reunion with mum Rita in 1999.

Rita was recently proposed to in the Rovers Return by the late Colin Grimshaw, played by Edward De Souza.

The decision to retire her from the Kabin could see the scaling down of 75-year-old Barbara's role as ITV cuts costs. Only William Roache, who plays Ken Barlow, and Eileen Derbyshire have been in the soap longer.

I like Rita, they better not scale her character down.

What a bloody farce the show is turning into - 'scaling down' Amber, I bet shes axed soon enough. Minnie isn't used enough, shes brilliant. I really LOVE Natasha and hope she gets a bigger role too.

They want to keep Amber, Natasha, Minnie, and keep Rita at her role as it is now - dont scale it down.

They practically axe Amber yet sign Kirk up for another year, WTF hes the most useless character I have ever seen, and Fizz is becoming more and more useless with her current storyline - although I like Jennie McAlpine.

Agree with everything you say and like you, I do have a soft spot for Jennie McAlpine.
I think Corrie will be overhauled soon as they can't continue with the rubbish they've had recently. I think they need to stop going for sensationalised storylines like Tony Gordon which boost ratings in the short term, but rather work on re-building the cast and making better use of the characters which will give the show long term success. Corrie is by far the best soap imo but really hasn't been up to scratch for a while now.
Also I think they need to stop the panto; Uncle Umed gets on my wick.
I hate to be negative but I had to get that off my chest :spin2:
