Course there's no diversity in the mainstream....money talks. They have the power over what we listen to on the radio and what gets press coverage. Unfortunately most people willingly accept it.... it's the pack mentality in society.... there's a comfort in embracing something that seems to have universal appeal. That's media manipulation baby.

Still though, if you look hard enough you can find the good stuff, even on tv and on the radio at certain times.

Except there is truth in my logic.

I don't like all genres of music really but all genres have their good and bad points I think. I hate rap but I wouldn't brand it a bad genre since there's no such thing as a bad genre, only bad artists really.

Saying that any music act produced by Disney should be thrown into the deepest ring of hell, most rap and R'n'B artists can follow them too.

Ah I actually like the fugees. *grooves to it for a while*

My post was targetted more at the generic flood of crap we get nowadays.

MrGaryy 18-08-2009 11:00 PM

well that sounds like a lot of fun.

The real problem with so many people is that think if you listen to a Britney Spears song you automatically are stuck within this little niche of Radio 1/Disney/Top 40 when most people over the age of 14 have a decent balance of both. I like a lot of mainstream artists including the afore mentioned Britney and GaGa but I equally like a lot of less known artists or mainstream flops.

Well that's in your opinion
maybe some people think Girls Aloud and Britney Spears have real talent

So stop being so big headed and acting like my music is best and all other music can go die because i don't like it:rolleyes:

Ditto to this! I don't like music snobs who think you can only like unknown weird named bands to have decent music taste. As you already said,it's all about variety!

tbh Twilight with all due respect and I say thisw in a friendly way you really have got no right to claim Enid has been acting as if 'her music' is the best when you have been consistently close minded about music out of your comfort zone. But I suspect thats an age thing and as you get older you'll broaden your pallet.

oh and to add to my previous point so, so many people seemed to have forgotten one of the main purposes of music which is just for fun. Britney and Girls Aloud maybe not be mega talented but their music is catchy and fun and the sort of music you can go out to or dance around your room to or sing along to with your friends, to have fun with. Music shouldn't revolve around incredible vocals and mindblowing lyrics and shattering guitar rifts, sometimes music is just there for people to enjoy.

Princess 19-08-2009 12:20 AM

Lol Gaz,I was going to edit my post to say that. That music is for enjoying, that's the general basis of it.

MrGaryy 19-08-2009 12:22 AM

haha great minds and all that :P its true tho, too many people aren;t able to enjoy music because they're so wrapped up in it being 'real music'.

Princess 19-08-2009 12:25 AM

I remember someone saying to me how they had gone to both Oasis and Take That concerts and everyone at Take That was basically there to have a good time but people at Oasis were a lot more serious. Which is just silly really... Concerts are supposed to be escapes from reality!

I'd say I have a diverse music taste, and I'm not a music snob in either direction. I'll like throwaway pop music and ADMIT that it's not respectable, even if it is good pop/chart music. I like creditable alternative/rock/indie artists. I adore having unknown artists that aren't mainstream or famous to listen to, and I really like and respect music from previous decades [I was born in 1991].

Yeah, I love my pop; Christina, GaGa, Sam Sparro, The Saturdays, Ashley Tisdale, Ashlee Simpson, Pixie Lott, Girls Aloud, The Pussycat Dolls, Take That, Disney stars etc.
I like my alternative stuff; Muse, Patrick Wolf, Rufus Wainwright, Lykke Li, Placebo, Evanescence, Green Day, Chiodos, Nightwish, The Birthday Massacre etc.
I LOVE finding lesser-mainstream, mainstream flops or unknown bands/artists such as Porcelain And The Tramps, MPHO, Amy Studt, Siobhan Donaghy, Dangerous Muse, BC Jean, Dreamer, XX Teens, Ke$ha, and Electric Valentine.
I also love older stuff from previous decades; Soft Cell, Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Bonnie Tyler, Duran Duran, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Blondie.

Obviously these are only a few examples for each category, but that's the gist. I love finding out about new artists/bands, regardless of the genre/popularity/age, I'd give them a fair try.
I agree with a lot of what Laura/Gary's been saying though.

I like a variety of artists and music genres. I like some chart stuff and I also like some more obscure bands/artists. The fact that some of them have "weird" names does not mean their music is. There have been many great successful bands with weird names......Black Sabbath.....Siouxsie and The Banshees......Vampire Weekend. In the 80's the charts were rife with band names such as Strawberry Switchblade and The Flying Lizards.

Ultimately it's about what you like personally. Your taste. Anyone who listens to music they don't like just because they think the artists name is cool are idiots. And the same goes for anyone who won't listen to music in the charts. There is decent music/artists in and out of the charts.
