So, since it's a question of taste, they can win.

True, but then the debate on the topic was expanded.

I personally do not rate The Beatles. I don't really like their music. I much prefer some of the other bands who were around at that time, and had it been my era, I'm pretty sure I'd have been listening to some of the "flower power" bands who were around.

They gave newer bands the ticket to really open up and try anything.

Blondie were just a part of the new wave and punk bands that were coming out at that particular time and, although they're excellent musicians and had a wonderful lead singer, I don't think you can place them anywhere near The Beatles. And in any case, where the feck are the New York Dolls, Talking Heads, The Ramones, Human League etc etc? Oh, and Roxy Music. They were all of the same ilk as Blondie and many are, in my opion anyway, better.

Blondie were punk/new wave. The Human League were a totally different kettle of fish. They were an electronic band who did not use guitars. Early tracks of theirs such as The dignity of labour (parts 1-4)/Being boiled/Introducing were a completely different scene and they were at the forefront of that movement. They are pioneers in their own field as were Blondie.

Billy 17-12-2009 10:09 PM

Blondie are epic.
I'm not a fan of The Beatles, so Blondie.

That's all you're going to say about what I've posted? Human League were still part of the New Wave. What about the other bands I've mentioned? I could give you a fair few more that were similar. And Blondie used synth in their tracks too.

There wouldn't be an ever so slight element of bias in that statement now, would there?

Princess 17-12-2009 10:33 PM

The Beatles, cos I love loads of their songs and I think I have like one Blondie song *shame*

InOne 17-12-2009 10:33 PM

He is my best mate, so yeah, there is a lot of bias.. but to be honest, he knows more about music than anyone else I know.. he is really into his music.. so it was also a true statement.

Yes, that's why he didn't really respond to my statement concerning The Beatles or the spate of bands very similar to Blondie who were out at the same time as them. Hey, Blondie are a great band but I was just reacting to people saying that they are hugely original and influential, which I can't really see when you put them up against someone like The Beatles. Oh, and of course the Beatles albums speak for themselves anyway.

lily. 17-12-2009 10:41 PM

I personally didn't vote them for being original or influential. I voted them because I like their music more than I like The Beatles music.

Sorry I was not aware there was a stipulus on what I had to comment upon? I am quite aware that Blondie used synthesizers but it was a totally different kind of music when compared to the early Human League. Blondie emerged out of that New York CBGB's scene that was influenced by British punk rock. The Human League were part of the Northern post punk electronic industrial movement with the likes of Fad Gadget, Cabaret Voltaire, Depeche Mode etc. Blondie were not unique, but were one of the best groups of their time on that scene. While I uphold the fact that The Beatles were a brilliant and heavily influential band, and still are today, they are not at the top of everyones list.

Well, that's what I responding to. Blondie are class, but they don't deserve to be in the final of this thing. I'd take Talking Heads over them any day of the week.

LemonJam 17-12-2009 10:52 PM

Smashing Pumpkins should be here. :bawling:

lily. 17-12-2009 11:00 PM

Oh get over it James.. Smashing Pumpkins are not THAT good..

setanta 17-12-2009 11:01 PM

Actually, talking about Blondie reminds me of a band that I loathe called Muse, who take it on themselves to nick others tunes and then slightly tinker with them. This one is a classic, where they threw in a few Doctor Who sound effects to fool us all.

A friend of mine would agree with you but as I said on page 1, it is all a matter of taste.

But seriously, they're a diverse band and basically every single song is different, original and perfectly written in it's own way, I don't get the hate for them. :'(

Billy 17-12-2009 11:04 PM

Eeeeeek at not being allowed an opinion nowadays.

I thought it was a matter of time before that old card was used.

Opinions are useless unless you have the bottle to back them up with reasoning.

lily. 17-12-2009 11:06 PM

Not really Shaun.. nobody has to back up their opinions..

Jam I don't hate the pumpkins.. I'm just messing with you.. ;)

LOL WHAT?
In a poll asking who you like better, why should you have to back it up with endless facts etc which is what people are having to do?

lily. 17-12-2009 11:07 PM

I agree with you Billy.

What's the ****ing point in having an opinion if you can't explain it?

Lol, yes, thank you Mrgaryy for that wonderful observation but that's not the issue here. The important thing to realise is that they are exactly alike. I could post both tracks and they're totally alike except for the Doctor Who sound effects.

lily. 17-12-2009 11:10 PM

aww... -holds James-

(oh wait, that's how forum rumours start)

Are you for real? Is there a point in having an opinion? It's just something that's subconsciously (sp) formed, so why should you have to explain it on something which is just asking you what you prefer?

InOne 17-12-2009 11:10 PM

It's called debate Billy, it's good once in a while. Or all the time in my case.

No I know that, and I'm all for it I just think it's funny/strange how it's happening.

Because to most, preferences are based on a preconceived set of thoughts on both parties [blondie and the beatles in this case] - I'm not asking you to go into a huge detailed debate on it, but when you casually come in here and moan about 'not being entitled to have an opinion' because some, who actually have the patience and tenacity to REASON their arguments, disagree with you, it makes you look like a child throwing the dummy out of the pram.
