I think there is usually something wrong in a woman's life if she chooses to work as a prostitute. I think low self-esteem has a lot to do with it, not believing they can do any better for themselves, disadvantaged background etc - becomes a state of mind. Often has a lot to do with the environment they grow-up in! So I think the use of the word 'choice' is really very unrealistic.

Well that is where the sexual abuse statistic plays a part, from childhood they feel they and worth nothing and that sex means nothing. The path that usually leads them there is drugs. It's rare to find a street girls not on drugs, that is how the pimps have so much power over them. They keep them supplied, they make next to nothing, but get their fix.

It's a shame more people don't look for the reasons why - but just sit in judgement instead. A lot is about luck - what family circumstances they are born into. There but for the grace of god ...etc. People conveniently ignore that!

Indeed, some get out some don't a sad fact of live, but if they're really hard into it, most are too far gone by like 22

It's up to the girl at the end of the day. They know that once they get into it, the effects could be damaging. If they feel they can face this, then that's their prerogative.

I've got no qualms about sex for money, but I do disagree with pimping and trafficking.

yeah good point. If women (and men) are going to sell themselves no one else should profit from it but them. In a perfect world people wouldn't be forced by economic circumstances to sell themselves cheap but if they do then pimps and other parasites shouldn't be able to use violence to keep them locked in a down wward spiral against their will.

I know it's legal in NZ, but not sure about OZ????

ange7 17-01-2010 01:38 PM

I think the idea here in OZ is to keep them safe and off the streets by working in brothels. There they can get access to social workers and drug rehab access and general advice about their rights. We still hear horror stories of girls coming form eastern Europe or Asia and being imprisoned in underground ( unregistered ) brothels and forced to pay off debts for the privileged of being used and abused. Short answer ..we get it wrong here too.

If it was regulated pimping could happen but more in a boss/employee situation

InOne 18-01-2010 05:47 PM

The ones that need worrying about are the ones who are drug addicts and have AIDS. I don't know about over here but in America if a prostitute sleeps with someone when they have AIDS they can get done for attempted murder.

Angus 27-01-2010 02:54 PM

If prostitution were just about the free choice of a woman to sell her body, then I see no problem - unfortunately, it is usually about women being exploited by pimps and traffickers and forced into a way of life not of their choosing.

Its double standards as usual - perhaps the question should be what do you think of men who use prostitutes? Let's face it if there were no punters, there would be no prostitutes. It is what it is and has been for centuries - it's not called the oldest profession for nothing.

InOne 27-01-2010 03:06 PM

Well the 'Jons' seem to be mostly married men really. Some of the wives even know about it too which is a bit dodgy.
