I never expect BB to make some exact statistical representation of the UK public but I'd like to see some kind of aim to the original BB concept of a 'microcosm' in the house. If you had 20 people then maybe 1 person is either gay, lesbian, bisexual or somewhere in that loop. This is even less likely to be an openly gay or 'flaming' person and may be someone who (for example) had occasionally had something they define as a 'homosexual experience' at some times in their life. Again, I'm not sitting here demanding some sociological scientists draw up some charts for this, but, I'm with LT that it would be nice to see SOME kind of proportional representation of society at large. Something like 1/3 the HMs would describe themselves as 'practicing Christians' of some sort and occasionally attending Church. About half the HMs would describe themselves as 'conservative' although this could be a spectrum with about 2 HMs 'BNP' supporting types. None would be the 'openly gay' type although a few would be virgins or people who you would describe as 'long term abstinent' people. 17 of the HMs are 'native brits' or to say 'white people' if you want to call them that. 1 might be black and 1 might be an immigrant from asia and another from poland. 1 might be a Muslim. None would be jewish. 3 would describe themselves as 'Atheists' although 5 more might describe themselves as 'agnostic' (not atheist in the dawkins sense but sincerely unwitting or apathetic to anything of it). Again - just throwing out a picture of what a sort of 'somewhat representative' house might look and feel like. Almost all would be working people who are reasonable well educated and very capable of running their lives somewhat responsibly. They never have fist fights. They do not go to nightclubs. Have not been arrested. Never been accused of bullying. Most would be very interesting people beneath their reasonably polite and well-mannered exteriors and almost all would have some issues they need to resolve but do not require psychiatrists either. |

Oh My...
I cannot believe I am reading such a thread especially in this day and age. Look at Charlie, I don't believe he was over the top? I don't believe he played on his "sexual preference" Okay, there have been some housemates who have played on their sexual preference a little bit...but, that's how some people are. That is why Big Brother is how it is, they select such a diverse category. Could you imagine if Big Brother said "Yes, come and audition however, if you're Homosexual, BiSexual, have a disability, have had plastic surgery or black...stay at home" - could you imagine how that would go down? I think you are very wrong in what you have said about people's sexual preferences. Being straight myself I can proudly put my hand up and say I havw absolutely no problem with gay people, that also goes for the bi sexuals, disabled etc...that have been listed. |

The show hasn't been a look on society since BB5, arguably earlier than that so the housemates don't have to proportionally represent society. It is an entertainment show, the producers pick the people who they think will create the most entertainment and best storylines and it so happens that some of these housemates fall under the homosexual category.
Yes some people will play on their sexuality but most don't/ We,as the audience, should take housemates as individuals and not be thinking 'there is 5 gays in this series, that is wrong' or 'there is too many blacks for my liking' It amazes me what arguments are being said to disguise the fact that some people are obviously homophobic. If you don't like gay people and don't want to see them on your TV then just say so. Don't make pointless threads and pointless arguments to try disguise and justify your opinion! |
this thread psoter is a bit of a dick
how discriminate can you be Maybe your point was regarding the extremely camp guys who overreact to everything and are just way too loud? For me, these "celebrity" wannabes are a pest that needs to be exterminated !!!!! |

I just do not want any people with niche sexual proclivities this year. gay men on bb have been tired stereotypes, bi's have been tired predators who have lacked any personality and ultimately seem desperate. What happens is their sexuality becomes their personality and as such they are crap boring housemates, like Charlie for example. lets hope for a house full of boys and girls, men and women only. |
I think you worded that in a way that destroyed your actual point, but, if I understand you correctly, you don't want to see housemates go in who are defined by sex, sexuality and image? You don't want to see a boring housemate go in that ends up being someone's favourite because of their sexual preference? If so, I agree with you. I think it's utter pants that Rodrigo and Charlie did so well last year; they did NOTHING worth getting there. I think saying no to all gay people is a step too far; you cannot say that all people are the same. I think the camp gay housemate position has been done to death, but then so have the airhead male model type and the glamour model who just wants a regular photoshoot with Nuts/Zoo. I'd like to see a gay housemate who isn't camp, and who isn't popular because of his/her sexuality. Sophie disproved the stereotype about glamour models being bitchy and self obsessed (perhaps not intentionally, but she managed it nonetheless), I don't think it'd be too much of a stretch of the imagination that a gay housemate could defeat the Big Brother stereotype too!

I do agree that attacking anyone who dares to say anything that might be construed as anti-gay, and accusing them of being homophobic is the latest craze! It is actually a form of intimidation - same as accusing people of being racist everytime they disagree with something - and intended to just shut you up and discourage others for expressing similar opinions - for fear of being 'labelled' in this way! Pathetic!

this thread is gay
why would anyone want a repeat of bb4 WE NEED FREAKS |
