Some great choices in there, particularly Otis Reddng, George Clinton, Sly Stone, Diana Krall, Thom Yorke and Johnny Greenwood.

Some good female songwriters off the top of my head (everyone I mentioned previously was male)...

Kim Gordon
Kate Bush
PJ Harvey
Bjork
Liz Phair

Nick Cave is very special. Great lyricist.

Oh, and Joni Mitchell.

GiRTh 27-06-2010 10:37 PM

Suzanne Vega

GiRTh 27-06-2010 10:38 PM

Steven Sondheim

People might slay me, bit I'm gonna say Alex Turner. The AM appealed to a generation, and you can't knock that.

No slating from me. He's one of the best songwriters of this generation and he's got that lyrical genius thing going.

Definitely. That first album, he just totally tapped in to what everyone was on about.

MrGaryy 27-06-2010 11:28 PM

Winehouse has got potential. Her lyrics are so bitter they're amazing. If she hadnt ****ed herself up she'd be huge.

InOne 27-06-2010 11:38 PM

This thread proves genius is subjective.

she'll be back though. to varying degrees of success but the quality will still be there, you can't lose what she has. on the plus side of her troubled times, at least she has lots to write about again. her lyrics are iconic, yet totally relateable.

I think she needs to come back without Mark Ronson. His production may have been one of the best things about Black in Black but I'm not keen on his retro approach.

James 28-06-2010 12:18 AM

Waters/Gilmour/Wright when they wrote together. Syd Barrett.

InOne 28-06-2010 12:47 AM

I'd also say Eminem

The song she wrote for Diana Vickers is my fav on the whole album.

GiRTh 28-06-2010 05:43 PM

Nerino Pallot caught my eye too but I didnt want to say anything - each to their own, and all that.

LMAO. So that's enough is it ? I thought you were going to say she'd been writing since she was a kid like Elton John, Gary Barlow or Diana Krall.
