I am from Ayrshire and on the rare occasions that I have heard a recording of my voice I can't believe how Scottish I sound. :S

Same here, the first time I heard a recording of myself I thought "Omg I actually sound like a female ned"

:nono: Only because down south some people can't understand them, they also get it confused with the Black Country accent and they are two completely different things, there's life beyond Birmingham:joker:.

I think most people hate the sound of their own voice though.. You probably don't sound as bad as you think you do.

bbfan1991 29-03-2011 04:58 PM

I find the Scouse accent slightly irritating after a while:(.

Chuck 29-03-2011 06:18 PM

I think that people generalise the "brummie" accent aswell.
The really horrible one's are Wolverhampton, Dudley, Black Country... those sorts of place's.
Most people who live in the centre of Birmingham really don't have that strong an accent. Even I hate it when I hear someone from Birmingham on telly but were honestly all not that bad.
Now the scottish, I really hate all variations of that accent. I've got a scottish uncle and i'm just like. :|

RtooDee2 29-03-2011 09:23 PM

Your right about the Black Country accent. Its way more worse than the “Brummie“ one.
My pet hate is the Northern Ireland one.
It seems to be a big trend in call centres.
So when they speak i just hang up.

Fife/Weegie/Aberdonian accents suk Niamh - trust me! I feel I'm lucky as lived a few places and also have to sound sensible/professional in a work context so have lost my Fife one.

I think Scottish accents might be a Marmite to people from the other countries in the Isles. I think I mentioned before, I used to visit Nottingham quite regularly to see a 'pal'. A few of the locals would treat me as scum when they heard me speak even a 'neutral' Scottish accent. On the other hand, a couple who were her best friends were totally addicted to Rab C Nesbitt.

"How on earth do you understand that programme?" says I, "I even have trouble understanding the Weegie-talk sometimes".

Their answer from that era was simple - Telextext is on page 888

Lee. 30-03-2011 09:22 AM

Ian! The Fife accent isn't bad! How very dare you!

I agree there are areas where it is bound to sound like a foreign language to some (even me sometimes) but some of us can talk properly you knnow!

Niamh. 30-03-2011 09:28 AM

I like all of the Scottish accents though, ones like Karly had (was that fife?) are pretty hard to understand sometimes, I don't care though I just like the sound of it! Where's Paisley btw? that's where Gerard Butler is from, I presume he's had to water down his accent alot though to get by in the states!

Well maybe Dumfi is too cosmopolitan these days Lee

Try East Fife (either urban or the Neuk) - when I ask for a pint on a local dive - everybody turns and stares! It takes me a few to get back into the local twang :joker:

My joke about Methil (where East Fife play) is that is every 2nd or 3rd word in a sentence is not an expletive, then you're not a local - so eff you Lee ya wee bass how's yon effing life goin' ?????

I knew it was a mistake to say anything on this thread!!!

Apols to any Aberdonians offended! Of the East-Coasters I'd gladly say Fife is worse and disgusting!!!!!!!! (I did not include Weegieland there Josy!)

Lee. 30-03-2011 09:56 AM

Josy's not from Weegieland is she? SHe's from Airdrie..

Oh yay! and now that I know Zee isn't from Weegieland, I can safely say that it is a god awful accent! (again though I'm referring to a very strong one, I know there are Weegies who have perfectly acceptable accents)

Karly lived 4 doors down from my auntie in a Council Estate - same street, not a 'fake' thing then Ken - poor girl.

I hope she made enough money from it and away from the serial 'alleged' rapist

Pyramid* 30-03-2011 10:00 AM

Let's be honest: regardless of where you come from: there are areas that people speak properly - and will have a more refined accent - and other areas within the same cities, those who have been brought up to use the local venacular, local slang, mispronunciations - which add to the 'chav / weegie / ned' sound. Doesn't matter if it's Scotland, Ireland, Wales or England - it's applies all the same.

Lee. 30-03-2011 10:01 AM

Now I thought Karly's accent was embarrassing!

Oh god.. where are you from again Pyramid??

If I have offended you too, then I'm sorry!

well, only one of my cousins has a proper Scottish accent cos they lived in France for years before that so the older ones have a non de-script accent:joker:

Yeah, that's true, even the county I live in has a handful of different accents, like you could tell if someone was from the Northside or Southside of the city or if they were from the country

Mixed bag me..... originally from Coatbridge - spent many years abroad, now back in North Lanarkshire. I'm told by English friends and work colleagues that I have a posher accent than some from the same area - probably due to being abroad for so many years.

Like Josy, when i hear myself via recordings or watching back presentations, vids etc: I think I sound ned-ish - yet others say I have a strong accent but it's not rough sounding (if that makes sense!!). I still think it's not soft enough!

Yeah, that makes sense.. I don't think I have a strong accent, but I'm sure to non-Scottish folks, I do.

I don't spound like this though..
