[QUOTE=Brother Leon;6328133]Doesn't matter if it was used in an offensive way or not. Just using the word is unacceptable and would be offensive to loads of people watching.
So it's ok for Big Brother to say it when they quote someone else's use of the word But it's not ok for Carol say it when she quote's someone else's use of the word That makes sense!! |

..all they really had do is to tell her that she used the same word that he used which had caused so much offence originally without actually quoting the word themselves, they've just made themselves look stupid...

It is all a PC storm in a teacup brewed up by BB to create a headline for one of Desmond's papers.

Ill admit I didn't know who Ron was when he went in... I asked Dave who he was and he said " oh he's that football guy, a racist bastard" . I said "racist? How?" . He replied "he called somebody a ******" both Dave and I are soo against racism/bigotry/any sort of prejudiced ****, so surely his comment to me couldn't have been taken as offensive ? |

The thing about C5 is if they are so worried about viewers being offended why broadcast the conversation in the first place.
It is not like with the BB8 Emily situation where there was a 24-hour live feed. It looks a lot like they broadcast this type of thing so that the Daily Star can print a screaming headline eg. 'LOOSE WOMEN BB RACISM SHOCK' which they are hoping will generate some public controversy over the show, and then increase the ratings. |

It's just not an okay word to say, regardless of connotation. I try not to replace it with things like "the n word" or "the n bomb" because then it just trivializes the actual word and replaces it with cutesy nicknames. It's not an okay word to say and she shouldn't have said it. Also, these "they should just switch off if they're offended" comments are just silly. I'm sure that if anybody's that offended they will switch off, you don't have to try and push them there.
I do agree though, that it was silly for them to censor her and then say it themselves. Either don't censor her, or censor yourselves. |

And what James said is true, they should never have broadcast it in the first place. |

she deserved the warning purely for the fact that she is such an idiot that she actually went and said the word rather than just said something like the 'n word'.

I should've made it clear in the OP that my issue is with these endless 'formal warnings' they give out, in the past you would have had to repeat certain actions a few times to receive one, now it seems they'll give one out regardless. Housemates used to be reprimanded and threatened with a formal warning if they were to repeat the same behaviour, and that's exactly what I think would've been sufficient in this circumstance. A reminder that although she was just quoting what had been said and Big Brother understood that, just not to use it again or she'd then receive a formal warning. That's my issue. |

I remember them throwing a girl out for quoting a song lyric that contained the word, no malice, no insult intended... a song lyric. But in this case, I think James (okay, and fingers...) hit the nail on the head when they said that BB shouldn't have broadcast it in the first place. |
