Spoiler: |
I am such an avid Brynner and J.J. Abrahams fan, and of the original Westworld film, that I was eagerly looking forward to this series.
I was though, hugely disappointed by the first episode - mainly because it deviated so much from the original film's storyline that it was a little confusing just who were the humans and who were not, and that was immensely distracting. The second episode was much, much better, and I am beginning to really enjoy this. I still have a sneaking feeling that the apparent 'protagonist' may yet turn out to be the 'antagonist' and that J.J. may have inverted the storyline - we'll see. |

Are you referring to Dolores or William? I could definitely see either (or both) of them going bad  (and in a show involving both JJ Abrams and Jonathan Nolan we surely have some big twists in store). |
Oh I didn't realise there was a film, if I watched that would it spoil the show anyway?
|
I wouldn't say so, the show is based on the same general premise but is pretty different on the whole :)
|
I have to say one little aspect of the show I'm not liking is Sizemore (that English storyline creator guy). He's just ****ing annoying in every possible way and the sooner a Host goes haywire and kills him the better :idc:
|
Another cool little featurette HBO have uploaded, "Reality of AI" (with more new footage so if you're not into trailers etc don't watch ).
I really find thinking about this stuff fascinating. Spoiler: One of the things I'm loving about Westworld most is the video game comparison, both with how interactions with certain Hosts activate particular storylines and also the analogy between what some of the guests do to the Hosts and what people do when playing games like GTA without caring because none of it's real. I think taking a futuristic concept and grounding it in ideas that are recognisable and very current today (albeit in different form) was a really good idea. |
Caught up with this last night it's really good, I mean it's pretty deprived and has a bit too much swearing in for my liking like an unnecessary amount especially when watching it with your parents, but the whole idea of it I really love

That scene with younger Anthony Hopkins :flutter:

:joker: Poor Teddy. I admit I found it hilarious (in a cruel way) when Dr Ford flat out told him they never even bothered to give him a backstory  :worry: |

I also find Dr Ford's conflicting attitude towards the Hosts interesting. He has friendly chats over drinks with that old retired cowboy Host and talks about them in a way that suggests respect (and there was that line in the last ep when he alluded to the Hosts forgetting everything as being a mercy for them) but then we had the scene where he didn't feel the undressed Host needed to be covered and cut his face to prove he couldn't feel it. I read a theory that he feels more sympathy for them than he lets on and overcompensates for it (as with the scene with the face cut), I could see that tbh. But yeah, I love how morally ambiguous they've made him. Also I'm fully a believer of the "Bernard is a Host" theory now (I'm in full conspiracy theory mode, so yes I think his "wife" he was having a video chat with is just part of his storyline) |
Ohhhh I like that Bernard theory
(I've caught up now, I'm hooked) |

It's really bringing back that Lost vibe for me with how layered and mysterious it all is and how the internet is full of theories :flutter: Also episode 3 scored the highest ratings of the season so far :clap2: |

I love Maeve too
That whole sequence from when she woke up and escaped the operation table was captivating :clap2: |
Also was it just me that **** myself when the stray host picked up the rock or

I love her sardonic, dry comments even when her bar's being ambushed or a dead guy's being tied up outside :joker: Quote:
Oh and I creased up at that female guest freaking out during the battle, "Oh my ****ING GOD!!!" :laugh2: The ending with Dolores running up to William and Logan sort of damages the William = Man in Black 30 years ago theory but I'm not abandoning it just let, they could have sneakily shoved in a scene of Dolores running from something else 30 years ago to throw us off (or not and she'd probably have a different role back then but I love the theorising so let me live). |

Ooh this is really cool, I never noticed. Someone on Reddit pointed out that an earlier version of Armistice (Hector Escaton's gunslinger partner) seemed to appear in that flashback when Dr Ford was talking about the early days of Westworld
Spoiler: They also showed her when Ford and Bernard were discussing the Bicameral Mind and how some of the Hosts became "lunatics", since she's a main character who's had very little screen time so far I'd bet this is relevant in the future. The Host who welcomed William to the park briefly appeared in the same sequence too. I love little things like this that I didn't pick up myself  |
I watched the first two episodes and I'm wigless.

Another fan :clap1:

I'm loving this :flutter:

Just watched episode one and hmm... it left me a little uncomfortable... in a good way.
It seems quite inspired by several video games - the wavering AI stuff reminds me a lot of Fallout 3 and Bioshock: Infinite. Quite enjoyed playing "what was he in?" (Beetee from the Hunger Games, that guy from Murder, She Wrote, Karl from Love Actually) but am intrigued by the actresses I didn't know anything of. Not sure I've seen Dolores, Elsie or Theresa in anything before but their characters interest me. It's just the right mix of unsettling/intriguing. Just hope it doesn't go too mind****y. |
I actually read that they said they were inspired by Bioshock  (along with Red Dead Redemption and GTA).
|
I was about to say I'm all caught-up now but only seen episode 3. DLing 4 now :ninja2:
Liam Hemsworth's character is irritating and a little pointless atm, not to mention Ben Barnes' and whatever the name of that storyline writer guy is again. But looking over the plot of the original film and Logan/William seem to be based on the two main 'protagonists' (if you can call Logan that) and I would assume Ed Harris' character is based on the original villain. Film spoilers: Spoiler: Loving Maeve, Elsie and Ford the most. I find the Man in Black intriguing as well but a little bit of a dick. |
I watched episode 4 earlier.

On Now

Another great episode
Loving Maeve |

I really love the idea of the Hosts interpreting the men in hazmat suits as sinister creatures from another world and that the Native Americans worship them as deities. I assume this means they've been having memories they're not supposed to be having also, I'd guess them remembering the staff entering the park isn't part of their scheduled story  The scene with Maeve and Clementine getting shot and the hazmat guys dragging them away was really well done, so unnerving. And Maeve having loads of the same drawing of them :worry: And since it's a weekly tradition ... POOR TEDDY :joker: :worry: |
Ep 4 recorded. Going to watch tomoz

Saw the reviews for this are almost universally positive except for a couple (mainly 'Variety', whatever that is) that are complaining about the rape scene in the first episode. (Oh and the third I guess since that's the same clip almost). And general 'overuse of gore' as if there's anything more than whatever's in GoT, TWD, AHS and whatever else is dominating television atm.
Like...it didn't even show anything inside the stable? barely even dwelled on the idea of her being raped at all. idk what these idiots want film and television to be? "Oh rape never happens nope let's never show it in case it upsets someone". I'm one of the first to get squeamish at television and film (why I've never really watched the Walking Dead) but I can't say anything in this yet has especially unsettled me in a visceral sense aside from the treasure-hunting old man and the fork. It's much more unsettling in a psychological sense. |
..I started to feel with last night's episode, a bit of The Truman Show type feel as well..obviously that wasn't based on AI but it's that same awakening type thing...

This show is so confusing, I love it Yes Poor Teddy  |

I've seen a few other people say it's boring etc. It's slow paced but in a good way I feel, they're taking the time to establish the world and the characters and to actually let the story develop. I haven't felt bored once. I'm just glad the vast majority of reviews have been really positive, it's one of the most genuinely intriguing and compelling shows I've watched in a while. My favourite thing on TV atm actually. |
