Because I don't want to right now?

OK...
I don't think that there's a better time than now... when it comes to our own health. But do as you wish.

I gave a lecture to a bunch of stuck up celebrities about smoking and drinking.

Now listen, and you might learn something.

Livia 17-11-2016 10:02 AM

Not cigarettes... no.

thesheriff443 17-11-2016 11:37 AM

I don't smoke but I bet there are loads on here would have Niamh blow smoke in their face:hehe:

user104658 17-11-2016 09:58 PM

Smoked "socially" from age 16 - 23, only when out on the piss, although in 1st year Uni that translated to easily 10-to-20-a-day, 4 days a week :joker:.

I've never even been tempted to light one up when sober ... I guess they don't have an addictive effect on me. I very very rarely have one now, basically only if I'm out for a drink with someone who smokes and no one else.

I used to think I just wasn't susceptible to addiction but, as an adult, I am hopelessly addicted to caffeine... so... :hee:

Maru 17-11-2016 10:18 PM

No, but when I was younger, I did enjoy the wonderful scent of menthol vicariously from people who smoked around me. I credit my healthy looking skin to having not become a smoker. It really packs on the years I think. Also, it's a very obvious odor to others who are not desensitized to it... especially if you smoke in home or in the car. Most people I know who smoke are short-tempered... which I always thought was kinda funny considering it's supposed to help calm you down.

The closest thing to smoking for me is burning incense and candles.

Funny story, we found one of those long lighters inside the compartment of our vehicle under the drive shift . You can see signs on the windshield (apparently) according to my husband, who says the car was obviously owned by a chain smoker... anyway I dislike when people smoke inside their car or in the house. Family had to repaint an estate once and they had to paint on several layers because the yellow icky smoke tinged color was seeping through the topcoats... awful stuff.

Addiction is one of the hardest traits to overcome. I have a few family members who are heavy chain smokers and a couple that are/were alcoholics. I don't envy anyone with addiction because I've seen how hard it is to overcome. That's part of why I made it a point to never start smoking, but I've always been good at managing habits... I love caffeine too, but I've cut back to just tea thanks to a sensitive bladder. Even then I've started to drink decaf a lot because it's not really good to drink caffeine post-meals. It kicks all your nutrients out you're just put them in your body and it's hard enough to eat right... I some of addiction is brain chemistry related though... I noticed after kicking sugar, most times I look at cake or a candy bar I get a headache... starting to get like that with soda and definitely get like that with McDonalds/cheap fast food

My oh my I have changed.

I dabbled in cigarettes through my last 2 years at school but sometimes they made me feel sick so generally avoided it.

In Nov I bought a pack and tentatively went through them, but I have been doing it pretty constantly since January. It used to be like 10 a week and now sometimes it's like 20? I can go a week without cigs but always go back. I can't tell if I'm properly addicted or just like them?

Addiction takes more than a year to settle in and you can obviously get by without them so you're alright.

I'm in the same boat as you. I've always been more addicted to the act of smoking than the tobacco itself.

DouglasS 18-07-2017 05:03 PM

I only smoke marijuana. Although I'm of the opinion that smoking in general is selfish and you're killing innocent people by doing so.

Ashley. 18-07-2017 05:06 PM

I always have some on me but a pack lasts quite a while. Sometimes I go days without one. I don't think I'm "addicted" as such, but I'm more likely to smoke if I'm feeling stressed.

This happened to me, I started smoking socially in my last year of school but around May last year I started smoking more regularly (only like the odd two/three a day) but now I sometimes smoke like seven a day and can go through easily ten when I'm out drinking. I'm addicted but want to stop. I can't remember the last time I went a day without one :skull:

Second hand smoke kills thousands of people yearly, the main examples are through heart disease or lung cancer. I know that having studied cancer for years at degree level and having worked on a cancer ward. It's just an opinion I have based upon facts and science, i have quite strong opinions that are not always within the majority, I respect everyones opinions though.

Jordan. 18-07-2017 05:28 PM

No I don't see the appeal of purposely damaging your health and stinking.

I'm sure you do. What I don't like is smokers getting judged for doing what they do but I can see you're talking from deep personal conviction though and you've obviously done your research so I won't argue with you.

I've not smoked for years but I could still light up right now especially when I've just eaten or if I'm having a drink.

Daniel. 18-07-2017 07:14 PM

I smoked daily back at college, I wouldn't say I was addicted though as I could easily not have one . Then when I was 19 I didn't have one for like two years, now I smoke when I drink, but only menthol

Vaping does help though Niamh. That's how I gave them up. Just swapped one addiction for another

What made you go and buy a pack last year? I've always been curious about what leads people who had unpleasant early experiences with smoking to develop a habit.

The one time I tried one didn't leave me wanting to go back for seconds at all
